Towing in cold wintry weather

FIRST DIESEL TRUCK. WHAT KIND OF MILEAGE CHOULD I EXPECT TOWING AN 8,000LB BOAT ON THE FREEWAY AT AROUND 70MPH. ALSO IS 15-18PSI NORMAL BOOST WHILE TOWING??

towing milage

Frontal area and aerodynamics (sp?) probably play as big a role as weight. Boat weighs 8000, or boat and trailer weigh 8000? I would guess that you are in the 12-13 mpg range if you are running 15-18 lbs. of boost. Ray

Running 70 MPH coming back to the Houston area Sunday while towing our 13,500 lb 36' 5th wheel (horrible aerodynamics) and fighting a mild headwind, I was running 20-22 PSIG boost, 850 degF pre-turbo EGT and got a whopping 9. 5 MPG! :( Of course, the V-10 I had previously would probably have gotten around 5. 5 to 6. 0 MPG under these conditions.

Edit: I did notice that I could slow down to 60 MPH and boost would drop to about 12 PSIG and EGT would drop to about 700 degF. That would have certainly improved my mileage, but I was in a hurry!! ;) :D

Ray's guess sounds pretty good. I towed my brothers boat to Fla for him a few months ago and as I recall I was in the 12 mpg range, say +/- 1mpg.
