I am the second owner of 2002 2500 24v 4X4 with long bed. I bought it within an hour of it coming off the truck carrier at a local used truck lot.

First owner sold it after a warrant rebuild on the RE47 after 69,000 and a loud clunk from the slush box.

Truck is still stock, though A-pillar gauges are on their way from Geno's

I had a chance to talk with first owner. He volunteered that the truck got about 16 mpg. That was with the equipment he carried on the job.

My first tank was about 14. 5. Given, I have been pushing it. So, I backed off on pushing the go pedal, and early into the 2nd tank, I hit 14 only, with the truck empty, and no other load.

I started the 3rd tank with an addition of Power Services Diesel Kleen, thinking it would be good for the injectors anyway.

My first thought, could the AT rebuild be affecting the mpg? I saw one thread that suggested the bands need to be adjusted sometime after a rebuild. If this is required, would it be under the warranty, or just a good practice gleaned from experience.

My biggest issue here is just getting a normal benchmark for this truck, and working from there. Iam told the truck was just serviced, new air cleaner and fuel filter, but what do I really know??

From your combined experiences, should I be accepting of 14. 5 mpg on an empty 2500 4x4 RE47, or do I need to get on track with some other efforts.

About the time that I install the gauges, I will do the fuel flow test into the bucket, bumping the starter, to see just what the Lift Pump is really doing. I will probably pull the fuel and air filter and see for myself what I have.

I appreciate that a good answer to a newbie's question goes a long way to help all of us that read through these posts on a regular basis, planning our next project.

14mpg does seem a little low. Do you idle a lot? Got stock size tires? Are you hand calculating the mileage or going by the overhead trip computer? They are always wrong(i'm told) If you're in a hot part of the country, that may hurt mileage too. Mine has been low all summer 14. 5-16mpg, normally I get 17-18, BUT, my injection pump(VP-44) is also going out. (0216code) Check your fuel pressure/volume soon, and get back to us.

Try this, turn key on-off-on-off then on. Wait and read any codes on the odometer. write them down and wait till the mileage reads again. If there are no codes, it is good.

Is the exhaust still stock? Maybe the resonator or muffler is plugged up?

I'd say, put some injector cleaner in it, and go pull a trailer somewhere. This will clean it out. Then see what the mpg are after the pull.

I normally get 15. 5- 17 every day with 18. 5 the high this past weekend. It has gotten a high of 22.

Okay - Not idling a lot, don't have or use a trip computer. Stock tires. Put my first can of Deisel Kleen in. I doubt if this truck has ever really pulled a heavy load, the past owner was a painting contractor, and ladder are not all that heavy.

I'll look for something to pull, as I know this thing just wants to work.

I purchased my 98. 5 thinking I would get 17 mpg in town and 23 on the freeway... ..... I am not all that heavy footed and I consistantly get 14-14. 5 in town and maybe 17 or 18 on the freeway unloaded... ... I don't know about the rebuild on the AT, but for what its worth its not all that different from alot of people on this site. I've concluded that all these folks getting 17 in "town" live in Montana and commute 60 highway miles each day at not a scratch over 54 miles an hour... ... . My two cents. Still not bad for a 7000lb monster truck IMHO

The MAP sensor is also known for going bad with no codes and you will get poor MPG if it is bad

AKAMAC is right a IAT sensor is easy to clean and will also give you poor MPG
