MPG observation

I have had my truck for a month now, and so far I am impressed by the fuel mileage. I have put 4168. 5 miles on it, and used 237. 75 gallons of fuel. This indicates an average of 17. 53 mpg. My best tank was 19. 8 mpg and the worst was 14. 9 mpg. I have not really noticed any improvement in the mileage as I put more miles on it.



In constrast, my last truck - '05 Hemi (2500 QC, 4x4, auto, 4. 10s) - averaged 12. 0 mpg, with a best tank of 14. 1, and a worst of 10. 8.

20 is the most i can coax out of my 2003. and that has been doing 60 on the interstate on long trips. I get 16-17 in town, beating on it some. I guess 20 is not bad for an 8,000 lb truck. I'd like to be able to disable the extra injection events as I am nearly positive that it would help economy.

You can still expect a milage increase over time in my opinion. My '06 Megacab started out getting 13-14mpg and today with 46k miles on it I get consistent 20-21mpg numbers. I also picked up an '03 short box hemi QC and it is getting 15-16mpg on the exact same drive as the Cummins. I like both but certainly the Cummins outpowers the hemi by a mile.



I think you need to really work the diesel to get the numbers up. Mine has about a half of its miles making heavy cross country pulls. I have seen the boost gauge sit at 28-30 psi for hours on end pulling a big trailer into the wind. I think it went a long way towards breaking the engine in and producing awesome mpg numbers for a 7700 lb truck. I also think that the taller overall gearing of the 48re helps over the manual trucks, at least on long highway trips.

I run a good mix of city and fast highway. My overhead always says 17-18.

It's not broken in yet. Cummins says 6000 miles towing to break it in. It's around 20-30K empty.
