Hi,

I'm new to TDR, (Not really, I was a member when I had my '95 Dodge w/CTD) 1 quick question.

My truck has around 800 miles on it. I'm getting around 14. 5 mpg on it. (Fuel around here is still winter blend) I notice it smokes quite a bit in the mornings (I do plug it in so it will warm up faster) I notice somtimes when after it is warm, and I pull up to a light, I smell unburned fuel, is this normal? Is my mpg normal?

Thanks!

-Roger

that is the same as mine at that mileage now I get 18 now 28k on the ticker I also have a auto 04. 5 my truck always carrys 1200lbs in the back

Yes, I used to smell fuel when mine was new but I can't now. 14. 5 mpg is really good for 800 miles IMO. I was getting about 12. 5 at that point, but mileage really seems to vary.

I have been around 16 in town since I got the truck. Just calculated it yesterday at 16. 35 mpg all city driving on winter blend. I do have the 6 speed trans and just turned 10K miles.

Keep in mind the 04. 5s especially have had trouble with injectors. If your smoke is white or light in color and is there on start up and then dissapates in short order and if it smokes more if you let the truck sit for a couple days then you most likely have injector problems. It doesn't matter if your truck is new or not. There was a recent thread on just how small a piece of c*&p it takes to cause problems with those injectors. I went to a 3 micron fuel filter and no more problems. But over time they replaced all my injectors in the first few months I had the truck. Your mileage will go up as you breakin. And if you can get by with losing the kitty then you'll have even better mileage. I started out at just over 12mpgs and now I'm consistently in the high 18s and on the highway can break into the 20s on cruise at just under 70mphs.

Why 3 micron??

It just smokes for a couple of minutes. What do you recomend for a 3 micron filter?

Because if you stop the particles that will mess up your injectors before they can do it,... you won't have an injector problem like you do now. Let your truck sit over the weekend sometime and start it up,. . you'll have a great deal more white smoke. The stock filter is not enough to stop these particles!!

3-Micron filter

Does anyone have a p/n on a 3 micron filter?

RBATTELE has done quite a bit with filtering systems. Perhaps he can chime in or you could PM him. I have the 3-Micron, but it's installed on my FASS system and I doubt it's the same filter. I will check with my local diesel shop and see if they have a number.
