What do you tow with?

With my 98. 5 2500 Auto I averaged between 10-12 while towing our 14K 35ft 5er. Mostly around 65 MPH.

My new 3500 HO we have done 2 tows, 1 with only 400 miles on the clock and we got 9 MPG.

Now with 2400 miles on our 3500 we got 11. 4 MPH on our last trip.

Both trucks have 4. 10s.

28' 5th wheel enclosed car carrier. 5600#'s empty, 9-10k loaded. Weight of car doesn't noticeably affect mileage. Wind and fuel quality make all the difference in numbers. Low of 9. 5, high of 16. 5 (high was loaded in the mountains, low was empty trailer pushing high wind in NE). Have about 15k miles towing, solid 12-14 avg. See sig for truck specs. I run speed limit +or-, 75-80 out west, 55-60 in the east.

2000 2500 Auto 3-55 rear. STOCK. usually get just about 13 mpg towing my 34' Airstream, weighs about 9000 empty and about 10000 when the wife loads up for a trip. Heading for the Dakotas shortly

Just returned from a 2800 mile round trip to Florida & back to Rhode Island.

5th wheel camper approx. 10k lbs, dually has 4. 10 gears, auto

RI to Virginia, average speed 60-65 mph - 10. 5 mpg

Virginia to Florida, average speed 65-70 mph - 9. 4 mpg

Truk was stock at the time with the exception a straight pipe in place of muffler.

Hope this helps!

George

TOWING HEAVY

My 5er is 15. 2k. Truck and trailer are 22. 5k. I'm heavy. Overloaded by 1k. On level ground it'll sneek up to 10. 5. Around this area, Chula Vista to Temecula and back a lot I get 9-10. Very hilly. My stone stock HO-6 speed gets it a$$ kicked on the these hills! Sometimes I'm in fourth climbing at 40mph! Good truck, steep hills. R/ Ian.

My '93 has about 30,000 towing miles and has always done well running in the 12-14 mpg range at 65mph. I am running 3. 54 gears and am quite happy with the setup.

Happy Trails

I voted "less than 10", but I have a good reason (see signature). :( :)

Actually, we get about 7. 5 MPG towing our 36' 5th wheel - it's heavy, tall and pushes a LOT of air!

Rusty

My'96 4x4 5sp manual with 3. 54 gears gets @ 13 mpg towing my 9000 pound 5er at 65 mph here in Texas. On flat ground will get 14 plus. Worst was 11. 2 fighting a 35 mph headwind!

I got 12-14 with my earlier trailer which weighed close to 8000#. My current fifth wheel weighs close to 14000# and I usually get around 10 on average. Has been as low as 9 with climbing and headwinds and as high as 15 once in Texas with about a 35mph tailwind.

I have 400 towing miles on the trailer. Average about 10 MPG. Climbing hills that drop into 5th gear at 2700RPM running about 900 deg EGT the computer shows 7MPG. Running flat at 60 MPH the computer shows about 11-12MPG. Haven't weighed rig yet since I am still filling it but must be in 20K gross range.

HMMmm - looks like OUR trucks, on average, don't deliver any better fuel mileage than those OTHER brands do with similar loads and terrain... ;)

As I entered in the poll, my GCVW with our fiver will run a bit over 12,000 lbs - and in mixed valley/Sierra towing at SANE speeds (speed limit:D ), we consistently see 16. 5 mpg...

Not too shabby for a truck that STILL keeps up with or passes the latest stuff out there! :p :D

97' 3500 4X4 Auto 4:10's. I voted 12-14. Just got back from a trip of 1250 miles and used 101 gallons. About 12. 4 MPG. I tipped the scale(have the weight ticket) at 19,500. Not bad for the worst possible combination. Ran between 65-70 most of the way.

Some stop and go but mainly rural towing from job to job, 13,000 lbs of old beat up Ditch Witch 4010 with all attactments, getting average of 13. 8 to the gallon... ... ... ... Pete

Towing MPG

I tow a King of the Road model 32ck which weighs in at 14,000 lbs. At first, I obtained 9 mpg but after modifications, I now receive 13 mpg. This is over a variety of terain in New Mexico in the northern mountain regions to the flats of the desert. :) :) :) :D

I voted for the 12-14

I pull a 37 foot 5th wheel about 15k

I have gotten worse when in very high winds or if I am in a very big hurry...

But 12. 5 to 13 mpg is my average.

With slide in camper, towing 6x12 cargo trailer weighing 17550 GCW;

@ 65 mph = 14 to 16 mpg

@ 75 mph = 11 to 13 mpg

the weight doesn't seem to affect it too much-

it's pushing thru the wind that knocks it back.

So far in last 12 months towing about 5,300 miles out of 23,000 road miles. Had a high of 13. 4 on level roads, with about 10. 6 in the up and down roads of West Virginia. Up to 20. 6 MPG on the highway with no load at 2k RPM. Much better than a big block bowtie. :D
