I have a 2001. 5 3500 Quad Cab w/ 4 spd auto, 4. 10 rear. I have 2500 mi and am getting 12 to 13 mpg. Is this average or should it be higher?

Probably sounds about right, I got around 15 with 3. 54 rear 3500. Don't forget it will get better once it is broke in. question is when should that be?? For me it seems that after 30K miles it started to "loosen" up a bit millage shot way up to 17. 6. guess it is how you drive, what you tow, etc. . that determines when the ole cummins is "broke in"! Good luck.

My 2000 Auto, QC, 4x4, 4. 10, LWB truck has never, ever gotten less than 15. 0 MPG, and that was heavy-footin' it around town. On the highway, I routinely get 16-18 MPG depending on how fast I drive.

You should definitely be getting better than 12-13 MPG, even without being broken in.

Greg

BTW: My truck is about 15 months old, has 23K miles on it now, and gets 15. 8 MPG average over ALL tanks sampled.

It should be higher. I get better than that when I tow (about 14. 5 towing around 10K on flat ground or rolling hills pulling a flatbed). Empty, I just returned from a 1000 mile round trip. With a tail wind going to Florida I got 22 and with a headwind coming back I got 20. Make sure all the intercooler stuff is tight and tow something to break that baby in. Load it up and go up and down some hills and work it. That will do more good than anything.

Torque-

I have a similar setup, only mine's a 6 speed and 4x4, and my mileage was similar when it was brand new. It gradually has increased to where I now see around 17 MPG, a little better when I'm not on it too hard (the speed limit on the highway is 75 here, which is a bit above optimum mileage range). What the dealer told me about 20 MPG wasn't exactly correct since you have the extra set of wheels and the 4:10's. It will get better, though.

My truck is less than a week old. It's owners mannual suggests the same thing; load or tow to accelerate/assist the break in. There really is no procedure, just drive and enjoy. It's nice having an engine that actually is happier working vice "grocery getting"...

Bad mpg is a good sign you have boost leaks. Take apart everything, and check for casting ridges on the aluminum parts. File and/or sand the ridges smooth and reassemble everything. Most of the trucks that come into our shop have some sort of boost leak present, and 9 times out of 10, the leaks are down at the intercooler connections.

I have the same vehicle configuration and 4x4. I was getting 15 mpg all around and 9 mpg towing. With modifications and now 5000 miles, I get 19-20 mpg all around and 13 mpg towing. Next week new clutch.

regards,

Ed

I have a stock 2001 2500 with 2500 with a 3. 54 rear end. With 2500 miles on it I'm getting 19 mpg, 16+ towing a 4,000 trailer.

TORQUE THIS,

It’s hard to tell from the sparse information you provided. Follow Evan’s advice and then check again. You really need to provide more information for any of us to compare your mileage to ours, and even then you’ll just have a feel for it.

My mileage can vary dramatically. I can get 13-14 mpg if I’m heavy footed around town. I also just got 23+ mpg on a 150-mile trip—cruising at 65 mph with a tailwind. I have been averaging 18 mpg on my commute to work—80 miles each way, cruising between 65 and 80 mph.

Tire pressure can also be a factor. My dealer had aired down the front tires to 45 lbs. to make the truck ride more comfortably on test drives--I run mine @ 77 lbs.

Hello everyone... first time posting here on TDR.
My 99 gets about 17-19 average at 55mph. About 1 mpg less with the air on. Towing about 8000 lbs it goes to 23-25 at 55mph. It improved at about 17000 miles.

My mileage used to be 15 around town and 13 towing the load. I had made an appointment at the local dealership to have a look at my truck with cutting-out problem. The mechanic had said I had water in the fuel, but more importantly, he had upgraded the computer with new programming on the performance curve.
He said Chrysler came out with it (around Dec 00) for improved power and towing. What a difference it made, about 8 mpg increase. Mine used to buck when taking off in second at under 1100rpm. After the upgrade, it has power from 700rpm up.
I hope this helps some of you guys out there. If you are still within the 3/36 warranty then it is free. Otherwise you will have to foot the bill.

Torque this, I just returned from a tri[ of about 1100mi this last weekend. got 16. 4 average at 70-90mph. cruised at 85-90 for 2hrs on one piece on great road. When my truck was new with no modifications the first tank of fuel retured 17mpg. I would check your fittings on the intercooler i have twice had a loss hose. Good luck,
