Noticed that in one of your posts you mentioned your truck smoked bad. As I mentioned before it could be a hanging injector but if you got a lot of black smoke then it is indicating you are getting to much fuel. First thing I'd try would be to slide the plate all the way back (or install a stock plate all the way back) and see if that helped. You could also run the star wheel way out (turned away from the motor) and also slide the housing over the fuel plate all the way back. It is kind of a brute force approach but if the smoke goes away and EGTs come down at least you have a place to start troubleshooting plus moving the plate, housing, and star wheel are cheap compared to new injectors.

The more this goes on the more it sounds like injectors, and yes they can go bad even before 100K miles. Look at this like a forced reason to BOMB the truck and get some good injectors. If you don't want all out 370's try the 330's on Ebay, they are like 40-50 HP injectors. I don't like my 300's, not enough gain and they only have 4 holes in the tip. I would have went 370's if I could do it again, but I like smoke!

another thing to ad is i think my egt are high. at empty on the highway i can hit 1250. (probe pre turbo). and in town just crusing im at 800-1100. i dont know if thats normal or not. also befor shutting down the truck at idle for 2-3 minutes it wont go below 450 is that normal? can high egt have anything to do with bad mpg?

Because you live in the PHX metro area... . These are fairly normal temps!!!!!!!

I have had Completely STOCK trucks run hotter. We have hot ambiant temps and almost 0 humidity... ... . Your truck just ain't gonna cool run or cool off like someone that lives farther north or back east... . Part off it is going to be learning to DRIVE BY YOUR GAUGES in the summer, when monsoons come it will get better... more humidity= cooler temps by evaporation. most on here have to fight ice and snow a few months of the year, WE have high summer temps. Period. When you drive it like ya stole it in the summer..... it always helps me to idle up(1050*+-) for 10 min or so before going to reg idle. On some of these wonderful july and august days no matter how long you idle YOU MIGHT NOT see egt below 400 no matter what you do!!! before you go making a bunch a changes, try running for say two tanks keeping your boost and egt around 600* while cruising even on the highway. It's hard but your milage should go up and temps down a touch..... if not then it's time to start making changes. ;)

But, my last few tanks have been Shell, which is that new low-sulphur stuff with the warning label against usage in 2007+ engines. Can that be that bad?

That isn't the new stuff. That is the current low sulpher fuel. That is why the label is there.

The new stuff is the Ultra Low Sulpher Diesel (ULSD).

AHopper-

When is the last time the air filter got changed? That could cause crappy mileage, higher EGTs, black smoke and lower MPG.

May need to swiss cheese the air box, or get a "REAL" air filter. Just about anything that will let that engine breath easier, will help.

You have received good advise here. Start with the starwheel screwed in toward the cab, take her for a run and keep doing that until you find YOUR sweet spot. If you can't find it move your plate and housing, etc, etc. . If you do not see any improvement, then and really only then start looking at injectors. I would hate for you to spend your money on injectors only to find that it did not help.

Just my 02.

sorry it took so long to reply i was out of town.

McLaughlin-the smoke problem is probly from my star weel beingturned out too far. now is the extra smoke going to compleatly kill my milage does it affect it that bad?

DLane- i see what your saying about the temps i had figued that might be the problem. but with the temps being only around 30degrees different will it be affected that much?

bmoeller- i have a k@n drop in i cleaned it about 6 months ago and reoiled it could it be possible that i put too much oil on it? i dont know how old the filter is it came with the truck when i got it should i try to see what a stock filter will do?

Matthug- how much did the 330s run you?

i got my ebay 330s for $335 delivered and they came with o-rings and copper washers, thick and medium ones i used the mediums and when i did my head gasket i switched to the super thin washers that came in the head set to get the marine injector a little further into the bowl of the piston

i never figued out if it was a injector or not. but when i did my timing it had slipped to around twelve i belive. i went to 16 and it improved it. what mods do you have on your truck?

These are the exact symptoms I have. How do you determine if an injector is hanging open?

I had a lot of smoke on initial start up after the truck sat overnight or longer and even with stock injectors and fuel plate my truck was generating a continuous plume of gray smoke (very light) while cruising at about 50 mph. Couldn't really see the smoke from the truck unless you were following it. Only way to specifically check them for all I know is to remove the injectors and have them professionally checked.

Other things that can cause similar problems are are timing, defective overflow valve, defective lift pump, intake air system leak, fuel lines leaking air, AFC slide full forward, fuel plate full forward, star wheel cranked full in, and even a bad injector pump.

Sorry for the slow response, missed your question before. I don't think cranking your star wheel would have that big an impact on your mileage. My mileage improved after replacing the injectors and fuel plate without touching the star wheel.
