Many shops have indoor ranges so you can try before you buy.

Personally, I recommend a 5- or 6-shot double action . 38 revolver, short barrel. Always ready, no safety, no flying casings, no confusion. First two rounds birdshot, remainder hollow point slugs.

No blinding, deafening, long range magnums.

Second recommendation (more important) is to go shooting with her regularly, every two months or so. Nothing worse than a rusty shooter.

Good advise

Mbarnett had good advise. Please let me carry it a bit further. Have the little lady enroll in a concealed weapon carry license class. She (and you) may learn many very important issues which make it very clear about whom is a legal target, and who is not.

She will learn all she needs to know about carrying. I took this course when we lived near Flagstaff, and it is invaluable.

As for caliber, I think a lady should carry, and will be comfortable shooting a 9MM. My Ruger P89 is a fine weapon, and she could shoot it with comfort and confidence, once she passes the class.

The class also teaches you where to place the shot, and the 9MM is plenty of firepower for properly placed shots!
