I was wondering if I need a muffler and a converter to pass inspection in North Carolina this year? I have a 1998 12v.

interestingly enough, they have never looked at mine (94) and i get it inspected in chapel thrill, just like jeepullr. but,i have gone to the same place for years, so if my garage is atypical, i would never know. i have a bone stock engine/exhaust so it sounds like a 2nd gen rolling in. might send send up a red flag if you pull in w/out a muffler and they would feel inclined to peek underneath. regards, steve whalen

I thought in NC you had a safety inspection only for diesel trucks?

I had mine with stacks (no mufflers or cats) and passed no problem.

true, safety only for diesel. i think the question revolves around whether NC considers the presennce of a muffler and/or cat a "safety" issue. my inspection station apparently does not. regards, steve whalen

They are supposed to put the vehicle up on the lift, check for any looseness in the front suspension/stearing, check for cat and muffler and generally look for anything not stock or unsafe. They are also supposed to look at the engine for any modifications to stock... Just because diesels don't get sniffed in NC... don't mean they don't have smog rules. When I put on my 4" exhuast, I tig'd my gutted cat into the system... then opened up my stock muffler some... didn't want all the noise of a straight pipe.

I have a propane set up on my 72 Jeep... It won't pass inspection... fortunately we got the 35 year rule passed last year... so in November (goes by build date) of this year I can put it back on the road with a "historic" plate, and no more inspections. Oo.
