Need help with locating Kawasaki engine...

OK - a must see....

I am trying to find a larger muffler for my 5000W generator. It uses a 10HP Tecumseh engine, which is annoyingly loud. Currently it has the muffler pictured here.

This is my first time trying to post a picture, so if it doesn't show up, it is Item # S105114 here

Any info will be appreciated. Thank you.

something off a stock honda civic? would flow well for 10hp and should be quiet. them little cars sound like sewing machines until they put the fart cans on. .

Martin, I likely have the same generator. And I agree, it's a loud sucker. About 3 years ago I stoped by a muffler shop, bought a small car reverse flow muffler, 1 1/4" inlet/outlet and about 1' of pipe with a 45deg bend on one end that I welded to the outlet. Screwed a nipple into the head, used clamps and flex tubing to hook up to the inlet. Also welded a bracket up on the frame.

All the above made it is a small, make that small amount quiter. Seems the generator itself is a noisy (make that very noisy) generator. Lessen the engine exhaust noise and it's still very loud.

We horse camp so we always have hay on hand while camping. Best solution I found was to use 4 bales of hay, make a V two bales high and set the generator in the V with the open side facing away from camp. One time I used insulated foam panels to form a sound fense. Hay is better, the generator is much quiter with the hay barrier.

But the best solution has been the Hondia EU3000 we bought last year. It is expensive, but man it's nice.

One last hint on the Tecumche. If it's been sitting a while, turn it on it's side with the carb down for about a minute. Mine and my brothers with then start first pull of the cord.

Good luck, RR

I had a Case riding mower with a Kohler engine on it (I think it was 14 HP) and it had a small car-like muffler on it. It was very quiet compared to the 10HP motor in the Monkey-Ward rider.

The problem with the "old-school" generators is that you have to run them at 3600 RPM to create the 60Hz needed for your AC powered appliances. The new generators, like Honda, have an inverter built in that synthesizes the 60Hz at any RPM. Cool idea

Martin,

I looks like the OEM muffler is a cheap POS.

Does the exhaust port have NPT threads? If yes you can try a Supertrapp muffler. It's very pricey w/the required resonator though. I bought it from Jack's. I have on an old B&S 8 HP engine and it's nice and quiet.

See this link for quiet mufflers. The more quiet the more $$ is seems.

Jack's TECUMSEH quiet muffler may be the ticket for a no hassle bolt-on.

Thank you all for your replies.

No, the exhaust port is not threaded.

I'll either go with Jack's quiet muffler or fabricate something to take a threaded muffler.
