I prefer no muffler!! My truck sounds like a big rig and I love it. As long as you are just cruising the noise is very mild but as soon as you step on it... everyone will know that you are much bigger than they are.

I've pondered this same question too.

Is it obnoxiously loud when u give it some pedal, or just nice and deep sounding? My problem is I live at the top of a pretty steep hill and I don't think my neighbors would like it when I come home after 10-11pm with no muffler. #@$%!

I will be ordering the kit, as well... my question is more along the lines of legality. I am moving to Tacoma, WA soon and have been reading through the Revised Code of Washington motor vehicles section. I have run across what seem to be to be conflicting statements. I don't have the numbers handy, but I remember one saying it is illegal to eliminate the muffler on a vehicle so equipped from the factory, but then I saw another section that said as long as the sound pressure levels were within some specified limit, everything was kosher. Anybody in WA have any clarifications for me? I probably won't put the kit on until I am in WA, so I could wait until after my out-of-state inspection, for instance. When they do emissions tests in WA do they check for mufflers or cats? Do diesels need to be tested at all, in WA? Oh damn... now I'm hijacking the thread. :)

In short... is no muffler legal in Tacoma, WA? :)

I recently went to full 4" exhaust and also debated the muffler question. I decided to go with the muffler (a Donaldson) due to Stan's persuasiveness. He claimed the correct muffler will increase HP. I am not at all displeased with the sound Oo. Oo. Oo. I, too, have neighbors who wouldn't appreciate the noise, or should I say MORE noise! :D

ZedMikey, welcome to TDR and to Washington State. Check out Stan's Headers just east of you in Auburn, WA. Also, check out the Northwest BOMBers.

Thanks, Sri Ram. BTW, I teach yoga and enjoy studying Hindu practices and mythology... I love them name!

I was planning on hitting Stan's after I get settled into WA, but that group buy price is too good to pass up, methinks!

Another BTW, my girlfriend is moving to Olympia in September to attend Evergreen State College, so I'll be in the Olympia area fairly often... not that it is far from Tacoma. :) We'll have to get together sometime and discuss our trucks. I'm always down for truck talk... and beer/wine/tequila. :D

Sound like a good time. PM me when you're headed this way.

As much as I love the sound of a straight piped Cummins, but there are times I'd definitely at least want a straight through muffler. Like when you got a fully loaded trailer and you're driving down the highway for hours. But that's just me.

Just installed my straight pipe last night.....

Under part throttle/cruising conditions I don't notice much of any difference at all and only a little difference when pulling a grade. When I got on it there was a noticeable change in sound... a deep throaty diesel sound! :D

I can see that it could get a bit tiresome while towing? So at this point the solution is to turn up the Skynyrd & Dwight Yokham... :-laf ;)

I don't find having a straight pipe to be loud in the cab. It's a bit louder than stock, but it's not super loud where I can't talk to the passenger without yelling.

The only time I think it's a bit too loud is when I fire it up in the morning, since most people are sleeping when I leave for work (6AM). I just idle through the neighborhood.

One of the main things I noticed on the way to work this morning was that instead of hearing the sweet clatter of a 12 valver and turbo whine... I hear a nice diesel note w/turbo whine...

I convinced that no Power**** or Dura**** sounds as good as a Cummins!

;)

I have a full 4" mufflerless with a 5"tip and my buddy used to have a 5" shorty mufflerless with a 6" tip no issues with jonny law (over that topic at least) However if I was you I would hit up DDP when you get up here for that exhaust they have some good prices and are an awesome bunch of people. The last few times I went into Stans he (Stan) was kind of an *****... ... .
