I was straight 5" stacks until towing 17k for multiple hours.

My truck is fully dynomat in the doors etc... And I still got this cab drone straight from HELL.

My god it was so bad I wanted to turn & smack the wife I was so irritated.

So the cure simply was to order a Flowmaster 4" straight through & weld it in.

Trust me, minus the cab drone, there is NO difference in sound.

I had a buddy of mine get a almost $200 ticket for his unmuffled stacked exhaust last week.

I was told my exhaust was illegal as it was "modified".

Well, Mr. lazy never looked under the truck to see the muffler.

This was said to a friend of mine while I was in the convienent store.

Illegel my ***, get your knees wet & look at my $200 muffler. :D

The only downfall to 'mufflerless' is that I can't hear my dually's 4 rear tires breaking loose when I mash the pedal. I'm reasured that the clutch isn't just slipping when I see the smoke roll off the rear! Small price to pay! I love the sound and enjoy watching people snap their neck when I drive by!

Rattle is nice
Rumble is nice
Volume is bad (but please don't stop ruining your hearing guys... my wife's business as a speech therapist is booming from all of you with profound hearing loss due to exposure to loud noises. $$$ )

I could not get a muffler back on fast enough.

I have straight 4" from the resonator back. The theory is that the resonator may prevent the drone some get. I don't have the drone, but I do have a nice loud tone. LWB or SWB also may be a factor with drone, too. I think my favorite place is pulling away from a toll booth while towing. She really sings then (windows down, of course). The other thing I like about the resonator on there is it looks like a muffler. But I've been mufflerless for 10 years and have never been checked (or pulled over). I still have the complete stock system in my garage rafters just in case. But I don't see ever going back. No silencer ring, either - really sounds sweet that way.

My vote goes for : NO MUFFLER NO RESONATOR NO SILENCER RING

This. I hsve my 97 12valve done this way and love it. The turbo is more noticeable as well as the exhaust in the cab but it doesnt drone or get annoying, now outside by the tail pipe it sounds really wicked especially next to a jersey barrier going the highway

I was under my 99 on my creeper with my air hammer Friday night and danged if the muffler didn't just fall off and hit the floor! Luckily, I had a muffler elimination pipe sitting on the bench. :-laf

We put about 100 miles on it yesterday and my wife said, "That's not bad at all. I was expecting it to be louder. " Every time I do something to it, she just smiles and shakes her head.

I left the resonator in place.

FiremanDave,

Ditto on pulling away from toll boothes while towing. :D I have resonator and silncer ring in place and it is plenty loud for me and my wife.

My wife is a third shift worker and when we go away on weekends she is sometimes just coming off a shift and she can still fall alseep to the sound of the Cummins on a long trip. It lulls her to sleep. :-laf

My '99 makes plenty of noise straight from the factory - and sounds really good doing it; usually have to turn it off at drive through and toll booths just so they can hear me talk. I got the Harley for enhanced noise.

I have been thinking about purchasing a 4" exhaust. Should I go with a muffler or not. Is the sound different? And how does each differ from stock?

No muffler is the way to go if you dont want to carry on a conversation with anyone and want to have an hearing aide in the near future. Son had no muff and it lasted about 2 mo. but it did sound nice for the outside.

I hot shot with my truck and from my understanding adding or detracting from a commercial vehicle is strictly a no no... ... Granted I have never a DOT Officer get under my truck and look..... But if it sounds like an angry beast on steroids he just might want to crawl under and have a look... ... Any ideas???? Should I just do it???

Yes take it to a mom and pop shop that has a very good welder!! take off your muffler and cut open the top that is the side that will be up to the bottom of your truck GUT the muffler and weld it back so the weld is where no one can see it. GOOD to go. == GOOD LUCK ==

Like gsbrockman, I have had a Magnaflow 4" SS system with their straight through muffler of many years. Muffler gets louder after the first couple years, so I added a small resonator. When I installed the Banks 4" exhaust brake I had to use their down and intermedate pipes, so now I am a halfbread. Truck has a nice sound with no drone! On warmup idle with the exhaust brake on, it has this airy sound like a jet engine. People in our AZ RV park think it is very noisy, however the is the 24V injection rattle, not the nice sounding exhaust that they hear when it fires up.

Not me I like it quiet in the cab. I had class 8 trucks with 6in straight stacks and really raised Hell throw on the jake brake ( a real engine brake 401C ) next to another trucker coming of a hill at 3 in the AM trust me you going to get an ear full on the CB. But after all the RAMBO on the CB no one was sleepy any more. blood pressure was up just like drinking coffee.

What I'm saying is gut the interior, Dynamat everything then put the interior panels back.

Makes a huge difference, trust me.

Reason why I did so much sound deadening is mainly due to the stacks when pulling my 17k 5er. The drone was so bad it would drive ya nuts !
