Whats it worth?

My new (used) welding equipment

I want to try a muffler test pipe that genos sells but if its to loud and droany I want to be able to easily reinstall the stock muffler.

I noticed summit sells a puller Summit SUM-900654 - Summit® E-Z Pull Exhaust Pipe Separator Tools – SummitRacing.com the pipes as the crimp from the stock clamps are deep. Has anyone tried this tool and had sucess?

I hate to sawsall it off and be left searching for couplers and have 4 extra clamps on there if its to loud and need to return to stock muffler. #@$%!

I would think you could always re-attach the stock muffler after removing it with a sawsall just with a couple of tack welds and use 2 band clamps. I am planning on replacing my exhaust... after looking at it, I don't think I will reuse any of it.

When I removed my muf. on my 06 2500, the crimps caused by the factory u-clamps were so deep, the pipes absolutely would not come apart. I ended up heating them red hot with a rose-bud torch, and with a lot of 'manipulating', they finally did. The muf. was still in good enough shape afterward, it could still be used again if needed.

One thing I noticed worth mentioning is, on the top side of the stock mufflers inlet and outlet pipes,( They can't be seen while under the truck W/O a mirror) there are some small 1/4" round buttons welded on about 3" in from ea. end. These buttons fit into slots cut into the stock pipes, that slide onto the muf. The buttons will not allow you to twist and rotate the pipe/muf. like you would normally do on stuck/rusty exh. system. If I had it to do over, I think I would probably grind those buttons off, first thing. I didn't even know they were on there, untill after the muf. was off.

Good luck, Ray

PS:

I liked the truck much better W/O the muffler. I find it pleasing to actually hear the engine running, especially in a tunnel!

I dont have a torch set and hate to start pounding and beating it apart.
I think this summit tool would break apart on the 1st try.

I just cut 4 slits on the muffler at each end with a cutoff blade on my electric die grinder and used the side grinder for the slits I could reach from the bottom. Then used a chisel to wedge them away from the exhaust pipe. Worked good. The slits could be closed back up and welded if anybody wanted to reinstall the muffler. Though I don't know why they would want to do that.

Like RHestand said, I heated mine up to remove it. Have removed several mufflers, as well as that other thing in front of some of the mufflers and this is what I found works best. Also, as he mentioned, there is that little alignment tab. It is easily chiseled off and not necessary for re installation. Borrow a torch if you need to or go to a friend's place who has one. Heat up the pipe. It makes EASY work our of an otherwise pain n the arse job.
