Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Muffler Question

Need to replace my '97 2500 4 x 4 muffler. The original muffler has a hanger welded to the after end. Do the after market mufflers have the hangers or must these be made up?? Any recommendations for a good muffler? I don't need the whole system just the muffler.

My cat opted to guard my stock muffler in the garage so I had a local muffler shop cut a 3" pipe to the right length and clamped on a Walker 3" free flow (NAPA # 21469). I used some metal strap to hold the whole assy up, drove back to the same muffler shop and had them cut, bend and weld some round metal stock to the exhaust system and used the original rubber mounts to suspend the whole rig. If you want to keep your cat you will need a 4" to 3" adapter, or find a 4" in and out muffler. If I recall correctly there are some that were listed in the past, so try a search going back about 6 months.

If you use the 3" Walker 21468 you can weld a 3/8" diameter rod to the muffler clamp to go up to one of the rubber hangers. If you cave a catalytic converter, you will need a 4 to 3" adapter after it, since the cat outlet is 4" and the tailpipe is 3". Some lawless folks have replaced the cat with a length of 3" pipe to avoid use of an adapter.



I have several stock mufflers in the back yard if you want to keep it stock.

a cat with an empty stomach, a 4" flow-through muffler, and a 3-4" reducer works fine with better sound than a full 3" straight pipe. of course, the muffler is only doing maybe 20% of the work it's capable of doing anyways (more pipe).



but i'd never do anything illegal...
