Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) muffler rattle

I'm brand new to this site, just joined TDR. I recently purchased a 1998 3500 Ram with a Cummins via the internet and I have no previous diesel experience. I'm still sorting out some problems, one of which is the torque converter not locking for long. However, the question I have at the moment is about the muffler. It has a nasty rattle at certain rpms, must be a broken baffle or something. I'm a conservative guy and I am wondering if it is worth going with an upgraded exhaust system, or just replace the muffler at a local shop. Price is of some concern and I'm not looking for more sound. I live in GA so rust is not going to be a major concern.

Being as you are not wanting more sound. I guess I won't recommend replacing it with some straight pipe! But if you ever come to Middle TN I got a muffler that feel off mine you are welcome to. Cost = Free!



Most people just straight pipe it as I did. Some leave the resonator so it is not as lould or give a droan. Cheapest would be to replace with some straight pipe and leave the resonator. I am not sure of the cost of just a muffler.

In the pay it forward section there is a free 01 exhaust system, perhaps you could get the muffler if you want it.



I know where there is a brand new never installed one the guy would probably sell cheap. PM me for his email if you want it.

If you want to keep it mufflered I am sure that you can get one from one of us here. I have my stock muffler just sittin' in the shed. I am sure that some day someone around here will need one. I much prefer the sound of a straight piped truck. I left my resonator on though.
