In another thread concerning mufflers, the suggestion again came up about removing the muffler completely - on the 1st generation trucks, that usually only provided lotsa noise, but no accompanying benefits of any kind.

What about these later trucks - will muffler removal reduce EGT or increase turbo boost? I realize unmodded trucks are boost-controlled, but what about fellas with various power boxes and boost elbows - any reduction in EGT or increases in total boost under load after muffler removal?

gary i was thinking the same thing this afternoon while beating myself up over my boost problem that i'm still fighting. have a friend with EZ that "lost" his muffler and he says feel's better seat of the pants,i question it thou. as he has no guages to compare.

It will help lower EGT and the turbo will spool quicker and it sounds like a real truck too. It does the same thing for 1st gens too.

I got rid of the stock system and went with the 4". I set my EZ on the lightest position and I noticed that the truck launches better. I noticed that the Turbo boosts up quicker. Chris

I don't know how far you are from me? I live in 29 Palms,CA/ 75 miles from San Bernardino. If you want to, come get my stock exhaust with the 3" flow through Walker muffler. It was louder than stock but made the turbo spool faster and helped EGT's combined with the BHAF. I went to the Jardine 4" and now it sounds like a real truck instead of a vacuum cleaner on steroids.

Muffler removal = A LOT of  :--) :D  Oo.

People swear it lowers EGT's somewhat, which I could see because it allows the exhaust to exit quicker. As far as "seat of the pants meter" maybe a quicker spool up. I only lost;) my muffler after the 2nd week of owning my truck and this is also my first diesel. I've had it a little over a yeah now, and I would :{ if I had to go back to a muffler.

It will make you :-laf as you pass the powerjokes while they :{ at the sound of their sowing machines. Especially with that '5er you have.

I removed muffler only [left res. in place] months after I installed gauges and I can say that in my otherwise stock truck [no box or injectors ... yet] I did see a noticably quicker spool up and very slight, maybe 25-50 degree, decrease in EGT. Both benefits were minor but visible on gauges at all load levels. I like the exhaust tone and especially hearing the turbo out the tailpipe more so than under the hood. At my present power level 4" seems unnecessary:rolleyes: but I can" hear" it in the future:D . Jim G.

Gary, with no muffler or cat on a otherwise stock exhaust, it was great. EGT's dropped a little, don't remember how much. And with my sound mitigation work, it was not perceptively louder in the cab than stock when running bobtail. However, hook up the horse trailer or backhoe and trailer, and it was loud to the point of being obnoxious.

I installed a Walker straight through truck muffler and am happy with the results.

I wonder if the addition of the Walker in any way erased the earlier minor benefits of stock muffler removal? If the improvement was only sorta minor to begin with, and THAT was mitigated by later adding the Walker, I'm not sure it would be worth the $$$ and effort...

What *I* am getting from this is pretty much the same as in earlier 1st generation threads - which is basically, if ya want anything near significant operating improvements, DON'T BOTHER with removing the muffler - but if you primarily want more NOISE, go for it!:p

As a "senior citizen", noise just for noise's sake doesn't appeal to me in the slightest, in fact, I get what *I* consider to be an excellent and authoritative exhaust note with the stock setup, especially on decellerationn. But if noise is increased only a rather small amount, and I can see 50 degrees or more reduction in EGT, and maybe several more psi boost pressure, then it might be worth it...

So far, I don't think that's what I'm hearing...

Gary -the stock muffler I took off my truck is NOT a straight through "cherry-bomb" type muffler like those who are noise sensitive are putting on OR like those that come with 4" kits.

I was skeptical about the spool-up and EGT issues, and did it before I had guages-first week I had it. But I really do think the spool-up is better and can't compare the EGT's to anything.

But with a BHAF and no muff on a 235HP stock rig I simply cannot get to 1200F--Summertime Southern humidity and A/C on. 1000 isn't hard, 1100 takes work, but I haven't found a hill long enough to get it over 1100-1150-and that's at 90+ MPH.

I know this doesn't apply to your set up Gary, but I thought I'd throw it in.

Shake the muff. And put an aftermarket on if you can't stand the BEAUTIFUL MUSIC she makes.

Boost won't increase in a steady state type of run, it is still controlled by the waste gate or exhaust housing restriction. You may see a slight increase in the peak boost (right after you nail it) but it should bleed down to the same as before.

Spooling should increase due to lower restriction but that only allows it to come on a fraction of a second sooner, same peak.

Do they breath better?

breath better yes? but sound? well, my magnaflow 4" flow-through is very quiet (thanks to a tdr member giving it to me!!). i couldn't hear much of it at all, so i put a 24" long 2 1/2" piece of exhaust tubing and bolted it to the magnaflow. it sounds better than a semi-gutted stock muffler and flows way better. there are other flow-through mufflers that are a good amount louder than stock out there.

my experience

All my trucks have had the cat or res and muffler removed current one has glass pack instead of res and muff for the first 76k just went to a 4 / 5 inch exhaust 4" down pipe 2 foot flex pipe 4 " then adapter from 4 to 5 " 26 inches of 5" pipe then a semi muffler 5 in 5 out 10 inch dia body and 4 foot long one more adapter down from 5 to 4 and the tail pipe. The old system ( stock less res and muffler) but with glass pack was loud to the point I almost didn't like it , deap growl and whistle. Now with new system ( on for just three days) flows awsome lots of turbo whistle up and down rpms a lot less growl and can bearly hear it in the cab the turbo deffinitly spools much faster and I have seen so far a drop of 25/50/75 degrees in egt's driving empty have not towed with this set up yet but look forward to it. This was my planed out system to see if I could get the sound I was looking for and I think I have. Big muffllers flow better but not always noisy maybe this would work for you ? This was not a search for lots more power but for the right sound with minimal bennys in performace for what it is worth.

good day

Here's what Imina do.

4" Downpipe and back to a 5" muffler and 5" tailpipe--maybe a 6" tip!:--) :--)

Hey GARY! you got that miserable stock muffler offa there yet? NIKE! just do it. You can always put it back on and tell your wife/SO we tricked you into it.
