Mwilson: man those Detroit diesels are extremely loud! We had a rental silo corn grinder/blower powered by a 6v 53 Detroit 2 stroke. Even though I'm hearing impaired, I stood 60 ft away from it. All my farmer buddies wore either ear plugs or ear muffs. I'd have to take hearing aids out to put plugs in. ;) Getting close to the engine, all I feel is the sound vibrating against my chest from the dual stacks with mufflers on them. My friends are hearing a screaming diesel from my place a 1/2 mile away. :-laf

Unlike many of my brethren here I wan't my truck to be as quiet as possible and have gone to great lengths to ensure this. Also, I have driven it with the drone completely eliminated (Fluid dampener - removed, long story) and it was a near religious experience!

I'm looking to make my truck as refined as possible and that means no clouds of smoke or annoying noise.

I guess it's one of those "to each his own" things :)

X2 My Son's truck is so loud that you cant carry on ANY conversation and that's just because of the HEAD BANGER MUSIC the exhaust is the base in the scenario I wont ride in it.

I used a 4" Borla muffler and a 5" turn down with the CAT still in place. Still makes noise if you get after it but it is well behaved under load at speed. The turn down tuned out the little drone that was there. Until a big rock smashed it flat and I had to remove it. :( Still not that bad but it made a difference.

I might have found pre-fabbed hangers. I took a few minutes this morning and started checking vendors. Walker had nothing but Arvin/Maremont show these hangers as part of a Cherry Bomb kit for Diesel Dodge Trucks. A 4" and 5" kit are offered. I could care less about Cherry Bombs BUT the hanger/clamp thingies are the cats ***.

I cannot break the kits down so I will contact Arvin for a breakdown after I get payroll done.

Have a look at my screen shot.

Contacted Arvin/Maremont Exhaust yesterday.

The bad news... . That is a kit produced overseas and the content cannot be broken out or purchased by itself.

The good news... . They are recognizing the increased demand for Diesel Pick-Up exhaust components and promised that they will offer a line of replacement parts for that market within the next year. I told the rep that those clamp/hangers alone would be a welcome addition for exhaust modifications.

Just installed the 51" Donaldson on 04 QC 2wd short box,cut 19" of the pipe infront of muffler took out the drop used a Dynomax tail pipe That hanger just behind the muffler is avaiable from Dynomax the tail pipe has the hanger on it. Did not use a hanger on the front as the new muffler is quite a bit lighter than the oem. Running in the shop noise in the cab seems the same louder at the tail pipe Laurie

If I understand correctly, you say it sounds the same in the cab but louder at the tail pipe. Have you taken it for a drive? If so how does it sound and how loud is it compared to stock?

Just had truck out for ride, definetly noisery at the tail pipe, and it is noisey in the cab not a drone just louder exhaust i don't think it will be very nice with the trailer on,but i think i will have to try it on Sat. going for a root canal thurs. and fri be layin kinda low will post results. Still trying to figure this out.

I had a well secured muffler with an offset in-out that's garbage but my tailpipe looks good so I'd like to re-use it. A stock muffler would do it but I've lost an opportunity to improve and I bet the stock muffler isn't cheap. The appropriate straight-through Donaldson would provide a flow improvement with little noise increase but I fear use of the stock tailpipe at the raised outlet would be a problem and hangers are an issue. The highest flowing Donaldson offset would provide a flow improvement (I suspect), allow the use of the stock tailpipe, but hangers would still be an issue. MWilson, the hangers in that Walker kit would be good on a staight-through but wouldn't drop low enough for the offset. So what to do.

Right now, I'm thinking offset Donaldson, find whatever hangers I can and modify for the offset so that at least the rear of the muffler is supported. The favoured straight-throughs flow about 2000 cfm with 12-18 db attenuation. The M120100 is a 10x15 oval which flows just under 2000 and offers 15-20 db and is the same length as the stocker. The M110189 is an 11" round that's a little longer than stock, flows just over 1800 and has an attenuation of 19-25. So a couple of choices for me. I suspect that either of these mufflers would be available at the same sources as previously mentioned for the straight throughs.

I also noticed in the Maremont Installer Catalog that they showed just the hanger wires so that a custom clamp/hanger could be fabbed with a MIG welder or whatever.

Maybe swing by a local custom exhaust shop and see if they would whip you up the correct height hanger.

Worth a try...

Had the truck out for a test pull, it is noiser at the rear not a bad sound just louder, in the cab it was also noiser. Got home and had a squeak when engine shut down found out it was front seal clamp a little loose so muffler was turning alittle when rocked against comp stopping. Found tail pipe turned when I was moving the exhaust tip in and out to see if that would change noise, found that that little exhaust leak made the sound at the end of the pipe really different almost like a whistle , so now i will do the tow thing again later in the week. The larger pipe didn't change EGT much 50* maybe seemed more responsive to the throttle. EGT was 700* post turbo OD in 65 mph into a 10-20mph head wind seemed not to bad. Have a solo trip tomorrow see what that sounds like, going to retow and heard of some one who has a Banks in the area going to see if I can get a ride , see what that is like Laurie

The results of the solo trip, no the highway there is a little noise not to loud but still there in the back ground quiet tolerable I think as does the wife "okay for 3 hours" then we stop so I guess not bad towing should be the same, sounds good in the city when window open (smile on son's face gauged that!). I think the Donaldson will stay on for awhile checking out other systems ie Banks and Corsa. Tried moving the tip in and out seemed to make a diference, may see if I can make a longer 5" tip about 20" just to see(hear) . The turbo sure likes the new muffler spools faster and more whistle, may have quicker throtle response. Laurie

An update on the muffler adventure, Donaldson is noisey in the cab not to loud but enough to be annoying more so to the wife, so I put on a Diamond Eye down pipe with the built in resonator a little better (got the pipe with a system for the extra pipes and hangers) I had this straight through muffler in the kit so I tryed that made 8 miles and took it off too noisey much more that the Donaldson, so now i guess it back to a stock muffler. Anyone know if the 04. 5 muffler (4" in and out) will hang on the early 04( 3. 5 in and out) hangers. If it does that will be if, may try a Walker 54637 oem replacement Laurie

Really the Donaldson was to loud? What model number is it. I went with the Stans Headers with the Donaldson muff and we think its even more quiet than it was when it was stock!! I did cut out that cat or resonator gizmatchi in front of the muff but can take it out and bolt it in when ever there is a need for passing smog test. You can hear a rumble when towing and your foot stuck in it but just cruising is OK

I KNOW WHAT IT IS I JUST LOOKED AT YOUR LOCATION COULD IT BE THAT MANITOBA AIR???? to clean and thin (just kidding)

It is a M09 0544, the truck never had a cat. exhaust is 4" turbo back all the way. May have to fixup the old muffler and put back on to compare. Laurie By location I kinda think our air is about the same, mabye tooo clean!!!

I ordered a Donaldson offset mufller and now that the RV'ing season is over up here, I finally got around to installing it. I've been driving around the drone band for so long, and putting up with the louder exhaust in the rest of the range, that I may have forgotten what stock quiet sounds like but I'm satisfied with this muffler. The drone at 2100 is gone. There is a slightly louder burble at idle but at no load cruise, wind noise and tire noise are louder than the exhaust and 30'' boost acceleration was no louder than what I remeber as stock. I haven't towed with it yet so that will be the final test that will happen when I take the trailer to storage in the next couple of weeks.

The stock muffler is 26" long, 9x12 oval with about a 5. 5" center to center offset that is both horizontal and vertical. The attached 14" inlet pipe comes in bottom passenger side and the outlet leaves top driver's side. There are 2 hangers at the back and 1 at the front, all welded to the inside of the lip at the ends.

The replacement Donaldson is M101168, 10" diameter, 24" long body with 1" domes each end, and center to center is just under 5". Attenuation is 12-18 db and flow is 2000 cfm, comparable to the M090544.

I cut the inlet pipe off right at the muffler face. I cut the back hangers off the stock muffler, rebent them to fit the exterior end plate of the donaldson and positioned and welded them so that the outlet location matched the stocker. The biggest portion of the job was the hanger relocation and an aftermarket hanger that clamped onto the outlet pipe, would make this job a whole bunch easier. If I have to do it again, I might look into the muffler delete pipe from Geno's to see if there is enough initial straight pipe to replace the inlet pipe of the stocker and get a new tailpipe as well.

I will try to attach some pictures.

Have another muffler on its way, made by ShuttleWorth in Ontario Canada, offste 4" in and out has same mounts as oem they tell me quiet etc but we will see Pics when it gets here Laurie

Laurie,

have you got any specs on that muffler? Physical dimensions, flow, noise reduction. You indicate that it has the same mounts as OEM. I guess the pictures will tell but it will be interesting to see if the mounts are welded to the muffler or if they are a pipe clamp type mount.
