I can't believe it! I was driving to my mom and dad's last week and the truck suddenly got louder. I checked and the inlet pipe to the muffler rusted off right at the muffler. And this is a 2 year old truck that is run 100 miles almost every day.
The pipe and muffler have a heavy galvanize coating, but the welded the two together with carbon steel wire. So it rusted in a ring right at the weld.
I fixed it for now by brazing it back together. The brazing would not stick to the coating unless I burned through it first. It stuck fine where it was rusted.
I could expect a truck that sits all the time, or one that is driven short miles a day, to have rust due to condensation. But this truck is run all the time.
This truck has had more problems than any other I have had. There are lots of nice things, but I would rather have a 12 valve engine with no computer.
So far, the truck has had these problems:
Clutch replaced (under warranty)
New PS hose to eliminate vibration (under warranty)
Heater box flippers sticking replaced twice (once under warranty - second time at $100 co-pay with intervention from DC customer service):-{}
Rear U-joint replaced (under warranty - I replaced again with 351 joint)
Left front u-joint (I replaced)
Now needs right front u-joint replaced
Now needs ball joints replaced
Key switch is starting to go bad
If FORD offered a Cummins in their pickups, Dodge would probably go out of business!! :{
