muffler sans drone please

So come on all you muffler makers. Build a bolt in replacement muffler for the 3rd gen trucks that,

1. does not drone while towing (under any circumstances)

2. is a direct bolt in

3. does not need a resonator

4. lower's egt's

5. is made of stainless

6. it can sound better, but not louder, especially under towing loads



Fella's feel free to add to my dream list. And it by some fluke I have missed such a product, speak up. I know there are tons of users in the towing forum just aching for a muffler like the one I listed.

no such thing... there's a reason 2nd and 3rd gen trucks that didn't come with cats from the factory came with resonators...



just run two big mufflers

Actually, what you've listed is pretty much what these trucks come with stock.



How can it sound better, but not louder? If you get nearly any "sound" from the exhaust, it is going ot be louder, because the stock exhaust has near zero sound. .





I just put a magnaflow muffler on my Fathers '05. Made a big difference in spool-up, and is very mild on the exhaust sound. I feel that it could easily be mistaken for stock.



I will be doing a mileage comparison this next week.



Truck was consistent at 16. 7MPG. Only change was the muffler (left the cat on).

Hey fella's thanks for the input, my comments are based on experience with my truck and from reviewing comments made over the last several months from guys in the towing forum.



My stock truck does not drone. But it seems that every person who changes the stock muffler ends up w/ a drone while towing. Those that have posted were told to add a resonator to the system.



I want a better flowing muffler to drop egt's, if it was somewhat louder, fine, if it was same as stock so much the better. I have heard systems (not for diesels) that changed the tone, but not the noise level. Deeper=better, louder= headache after 10 hrs.



I want stainless for the durability.



Gimme some credit guys, I have a long list of demands that I know may be a challenge, but at least I didn't ask for it to cost under $200. 00

if you want a muffler that'll lower EGT's without hurting the ears, get a 51" big truck muffler... it won't be stainless, but unless you're in salt country, it'll last forever... diesels don't have water in the exhaust like gassers!



if it hurts your ears, get another muffler to plumb up front or do some interior sound deadening.

He has a silverline exhaust (stainless) with an aeroturbine, one 24'' SL muffler, and one SL 36" muffler, with no tip and has no drone ever. I think big long tips cause extra drone.

Last week I pulled off my stainless steel tip that I purchased from Geno's and I noticed a little drone with it off. I had it off to clean off a freakin' plastic adhesive label that stuck to it (not that it matters).



Looking at different trucks I've noticed that the stock exhaust ends up in different places and pointed at different angles. Mine is almost flush with the edge on the bottom of the rear quarter panel just ahead of the bumper. It's like the pickup bed must have been resonating from the exhaust. I put the tip back on and now it extends about three inches past that bottom edge. The little drone without the tip is gone. I would not have believed it and maybe it's my imagination but it certainly seems to make a difference getting the exhaust past that sharp edge down there.

I'm using the 4" Walker 21471 on my 96, no drone. It's the only muffler on there. Just put it in forward some to reduce the length of the long section.

The gutted factory mufflers on both my trucks meet all your requirements except they are not stainless. I used to own a muffler shop and have studdied how mufflers work. It is possible to make a muffler that is nothing more than a wide place in the exhaust system and still control the noise. My trucks have NO drone at any speed, load, or throttle! The exhaust tone is slightly different than stock, but really isn't any louder.



I have written instructions for the '92 and 01. 5. They wouldn't be exactly the same on the newer trucks, but the principles would still apply. If interested in learning how to gut a muffler, send me a PM with an E-mail address and I will gladly send them to you.

I have heard good things about the Silent Might mufflers... I have never seen one. However, it WILL NOT be a direct bolt in muffler since the inlet and outlet are not in the same place as the stock muffler!

i have recently come to learn that with an upgraded exhaust, certain rpm's are louder than others. now, when i take a long trip, i'm using an rpm range that doesn 't resonate badly, but still give me a good speed. some rpm ranges are not even noticable that the exhaust was upgraded. this is with no muffler at all and still holds true when towing. sometimes it's not a problem with the truck, its just how you drive it.
