Mexican Truck-

Should Sam Memmolo Be Allowed to Write for the TDR??

I believe that it is technically illegal to alter your exhaust - probably in all states. I don't know what the fine is - maybe a warning requiring you to repair it within a certain number of days. It probably varies by state too.

My deputy friends here tell me only an officer with an ax to grind would write me for it. I left my resonator, and I think if I were ever checked, it may look enough like a muffler to get me by. I don't think the sound would tip them off much since these trucks are so loud to begin with. I think as long as you don't act like a goofball around a cop, you're ok. If you're pulled over for something else and are respectful to the officer, I don't think you'd be hassled either. If you were a jerk to a cop pulling you over, you would be just asking for extra trouble.

Frank,

I was pulled over on the 4th of July for doing 62 in a 55 and the trooper walked up to my truck on the right side and I thought for sure he would say something about the "muffler delete package" I have. I couldn't shut it down immediately because my EGT was over 300. Nothing was said about my exhaust and I didn't get a ticket... . ;)

well, i got pulled over for the straight pipe. some early 20's cop pulled me over for speeding (just cruising, listening to some music) doing 37 in a 25 (no one does 25 by the beach during the non-summer months). needless to say he got underneath the truck and looked at the straight pipe. he tried to pressure me into admitting, but i played stupid. i got a summon for lack of prove of insurance (updated cards didn't come in). he was yelling at me "you need a muffler!". "if i see you down here again without a muffler, i'm going to have your truck impounded and investigated". "modifying an exhaust is a criminal offense", blah blah blah. needless to say, it scared me enough to run down to my dad's house and resintall the cat and muffler that night! well, i just gutted the cat last weekend and that was a lot better. so, it is illegal of course, but it depends on where you live. in the middle of nowhere? in the big cities? who cares (except for maybe inspection purposes). it's mostly the smaller towns like mine that get on your case. as bad as our cops are, they didn't pull me over. it was someone at Old Orchard Beach (and they're notorious for this stuff). i miss my straight pipe, but i'll get a flow through muffler in the future!

that's my story--sorry it's so long

btw, why is that Harley's can get away with straight pipes (being cool), but yet, we can't?

A couple of years ago someone asked if anyone had ever been busted for no muffler. Not one person replied that they had...

I took mine off the 2nd week I had my truck after doing a lot of research into whether or not it would hurt my truck. Yes it is illegal to do in just about every state, but here in TN they only check for Cat's and that's just if your run'n a gasser. Diesel's are exempt no questions asked..... "Just sign this paper here sir stating your truck is a diesel or over 8800lbs GVWR" that's all I had to do to get my tags!:D

But Boy O boy did I think I was gonna get it one night.

Our town square is on a hill so you come / one side go ___ for a little bit and then \ the other side. Well I was out and in a "wha tha hell have a little fun" mood one night. I laid into her from a start on the front side of the hill, shifted from 2nd to 3rd and laid into her again MAN! was she sound'n good echo'n off these walls! :D

Come across the back side of the hill (the \ part) and push the clutch in to hit 4th and let 'er have it again when I looked up to see 3 County deputies in a semi-circle looking up at me doing the

 :--) #@$%! routine

Thought for sure I was gonna get the hugest ticket ever in my town, but I just put 'er down in 4th let the clutch out and didn't touch the loud pedal until after I lost sight of them in my rear view. :p

Right after I got my truck straight piped one of my good buddies who is a cop still hadn't seen my new truck. Guys keep in mind I'm 19, well I'm leaving work one night come across a hill on the main road to see him get out and walking up to a car.

Timed it just right I slipped the clutch and blipped it right beside him ... made him do a  ... . :-laf

Told him about it like 2 days later and he was like "I thought that was you!"

I live in a town of 93,000... and a lot of city police! My truck has been straight piped nearly 2 years. I have even left stop lights/signs next to motor offices and not even a second look. But I do go easy on the loud pedal when I am in that situation:-laf :-laf :-laf

The best ones are when you crusie thru an RV park and everybody turns and looks in your direction. And you can't get parked and cooled down quick enough before you have 2 or 3 fellow Rv's coming over wanting to know. . 'why does your truck sound that way'?. . Most of the time I dont even have a chance to explain before my 14 yr old daughter explains the hows and why her daddy's truck sounds the way it does. And then she tells the about the rest of the mods that I have done to the truck. And heaven help them if they own a PSD. . she does not cut them any slack, she tells them what she thinks about their 'want b truck' I love my daughter!!!!!!!!

Don't know if no muffler is illegal in VA, but it is not in TX.

You know it, too. Every other CTD sounds like a freight train runnin' 80 down the interstate... .

Jennifer, it's a federal law that you can't modify your exhaust system, illegal in all 50 states. Could be that TX chooses not to enforce it though.

I think I'm gonna ditch it to night time for the beast to emerge?!?

thank you all very much for the in put I may stick one back in in a couple weeks if I find a muffler about a foot or so long. may be I'l peel it open and un muffle it? dont know. may wait til I need itinspected again. Or will they look???? dont knowthat either wait and see:-laf

Frank

yep, so tecnically a 4 inch system would be illegal? or even say an exhaust system for a gasser? no one really cares of course (well, some people around here), but the only real problem i see is a 4 inch system removing the cat. hopefully the mechanics wouldn't know. so basically the feds want to restrict us and make the aftermarket companies lose business. next they'll take out cupholders because coffee cups can fall and burn people:rolleyes:

No muffler

 Man i love it without a muffler (it just fell off )

HONEST. I been running it like that awhile. I usually lay off the heavy right foot while I'm in town, but sometimes I put the hammer down right near a cop but they don't seem to notice.
