Guns, Bows, Shooting Sports, and Hunting Multi Purpose rifle?

There may be no "perfect" multi purpose rifle, the mere term means you are giving up something to be better at something else. What are your opinions? I really like the sig swat but 5. 56 is not an ideal hunting round. I also like the SSG 3000 but that may be a tad... more then anyone needs. Especially for the cost. 2 very different guns obviously, what are your favorite multi purpose rifles? If you dont have one what is your favorite hunting or assault type rifle?

M1A, AR10,... any magazine fed 7. 62mm semi auto would leave you well enough armed for any situation outside of Africa. Maybe ream the camber to . 308 specs and work up some 220gr loads if you live in Alaska.

I really like the M14 platform. Get a 5 rd mag and viola. Hunting rifle.

Only one rifle? I would go with a ruger 10-22 or a 22 win mag. A 22 in the head will put down any animal (on our continent)just as quick as a 308 thru the heart. plus you can carry thousands of rounds for the same weight as a few hundred 308's.



My next choice would probably be an AK47 its still on the small side and the ammo weight aint so bad.





Luckily I have more guns than my wife has shoes and I can choose one for the specific job. It's kinda like having 500 piece tool set vs a Vice grip and hammer. either will get the job done but its a lot easier with the "proper" tool

Saiga IZ-137, basically an AK-47 style rifle in . 308. 16" barrel, 8 round mag stock, available up to 25 round in the aftermarket. "Convertable" to AK trigger group and stocks. <$500 new. Love mine.

The perfect multipurpose rifle is the one you are most familiar with. A common 30 caliber round like the 30-30, 30-06, or 308 would have enough bullet choices to handle varmints to moose. If you are defending your home or truck, a long gun is awkward. I hunt with a Winchester 94, a Ruger M77V 308, and a BAR 300 Win Mag. If I had to choose only one for home defense and hunting, it would be my Mossberg 500 12 gauge.

I vote AR-15, but I'm biased. They are light, accurate, have minimum recoil, easy to obtain parts for, easy to obtain ammo for, can be customized with a variety of accessories, and are cool looking!

No such animal... . Take the largest animal you want to kill and then take the smallest animal with the largest amount of damage you are able to live with. Then you need to factor in the ranges you are going to be shooting at and consider down range knock down power. I also like the 30 cal. rifles. I personally like my 300 WSM, but I have been looking at the 270 WSM also. You can't campare a hunting rifle to a close quarters rifle, to a varmit. They are three different animals in my opinion. An AR with a heavy barrel, in 308 would be a good choice if you want only one.

I could have gotten a Valmet M76 about 5 years back.

Buddy of mine would have send to me direct, but it's a banned rifle here so I didnt want to put myself in that position.

BTW he wanted $500 for it, which is wayyyy under what theyre worth.

I believe it was the 5. 56 version.

I don't know exactly which platform I'd choose, but I would probably pick a . 30-06. With bullets available from sub-100 grains all the way to the upper 200's, there isn't anything on this continent you can't do with it. It might be a little low end for big things with big teeth, but it will get the job done. Something in a mid-length barrel (22-24"), maybe a scout style setup. Of course, you might want one or two barrels with different twist rates to stabilize the range of bullets available. Does that count as more than one gun?

I second the 30/06. Bullet for anything in this world. May not be the best at any single one, but there are bullets that will surely handle the smallest animals, all the way up to elephants (220 solids). . Bell used a 7x57 Mauser for elephants. Shot placement was his friend. I know others will say different, but the 30/06 is still just as popular today as it was 50-75-100 years ago! Oh, and a good bolt rifle, Remington, Winchester, Ruger, Browning, you pick it, with a 1-10" twist it will stabilize anything you can stuff in the chamber. Add in a good 2x7 or 3x9 scope. . This is make believe to me, as I own enough that I hope I never have to choose one, but if I did, that would be it. Scotty

Thanks for the SF. . Not to get too far off, when were you a Marine? One tidbit I forgot was the 30/06 made a pretty decent CQB round also, remember the close quarters in Japan and Europe that our Grandfathers fought in? They didn't seem to complain too much about it.
