imo a 22-24" is a bit long to be a true scout rifle.

I'm putting together an M14 with an 18" bbl. It's gonna have home pretty interesting muzzle blast. :-laf I'm already known at the range for my Guide gun that's ported. :-laf:-laf#@$%!

I spent my summers growing up in St Lawrence county. Beautiful place!

Any all purpose firearm is a trade off and won't be ideal for anything. Have you noticed they make more than one size hammer?



The best compromise rifle I can think of would be a AR10 in 308 or an AR15 in 6. 8.

After much thumbing through the web, I had narrowed down to AR-10 or AR-15. AR-15 is definitely cheaper to shoot but I think I have narrowed it down to this: SA58 FAL PARATactical Carbine, . 308 Cal. -D S Arms



Mini SA58 FAL OSW Rifle, Semi Auto . 308 Cal. -D S Arms is also in the running but a 13" barrel may be to short. What do you guys think?

13" bbl is short for a 308... . even for a 223.

It'll also require a tax stamp (+$200 IIRC)and added paperwork.

There may be no "perfect" multi purpose rifle, the mere term means you are giving up something to be better at something else. What are your opinions?

A lever action in . 38/. 357.

I think the HK-416 is a great for self defense at home. It uses a new "proprietary gas system", which is more reliable than the M4 and M16 "direct impingement system" and it fires the 5. 56 Nato round. The HK-417 would be a great hunting rifle with its decreased rate of fire, 20 inch available barrel, and it uses the . 308 winchester equivalent, 7. 62 Nato round. Sadly the 417 is only available to the gov't, darn the Man!

just bought a socom II m1a ... ... just a nice firearm to have

just picked up a new toy; socom16... a little lighter than the above. Not planing to load it up. Possibly a small forward scope. I want to see how the sights work out first. Definitely a luxury, but a real nice SHTF go-to rifle to have in the rack. A very multi-purpose rifle. Otherwise, I'm real happy with my marlin lever in 44. A lever in a 357/38 would be just as nice for an all-purpose rifle. If marlin made one in 20" SS, I'd go that way. The nice thing about the levers is you can use the same ammo for the wheel gun. I carry both on overnight wheeling trips; a pistol and a rifle.

The front site on the Socom is HUGE. It will cover up targets real quick. When siting it in use a 6 o'clock hold.

What do you mean by all purpose? If it's hunting med to large game & a little target shooting, I like a . 308 cal. , especially in a semi-auto. I'm also biased toward the Browning BAR. It's good for brush and open range and priced reasonably. I'm also certainly not discrediting a previous comment that a well placed 22, especially a 22mag will take down almost any game animal. I can attest to its effectiveness, but there have been many deer that I've killed that I would have never had an opportunity to take a head shot... ... then again, maybe you are that good.

It's OK I descredited myself

Luckily I have more guns than my wife has shoes and I can choose one for the specific job. It's kinda like having 500 piece tool set vs a Vice grip and hammer. either will get the job done but its a lot easier with the "proper" tool

Truthfully, I too have a gun for each purpose..... but I do have favorites. For Deer hunting using beagles (part of the culture in my neck of the woods) its usually heavy brush, I exclusively use my Browning Gold hunter 12 with 00Buck, Still hunting in medium dense forest (up to 100yd shot) its my 35 Rem. with a ghost ring sight, for still hunting in open fields/cut overs its my 270 Win featherweight, but when I travel to Rifle only country w/o the option of taking so many weapons and probably encounter of varying terrains, I like the . 308 BAR. I still have many other for small game, birds and just about every other excuse I can think of to justify another purchase...

I also subscribe to the multi-gun approach but consider my Browning B92 in . 44 Mag with a Marbles tang sight (used as a ghost ring) as a pretty good 'go to' gun. 5 shot 3" at 100 yds from the bench with MechTec 240 gr JHP. The Western levergun doesn't create as much 'public attention' as a more serious selection might. If the SHTF, out comes the M1A (Armscor receiver, K's broach cut barrel, NM trigger, NM rod, NM sights, Smith scope bridge, issue plastic stock, bi-pod, originally put it together in the '70's),. 75" with 175 gr lake City, 1. 6" with 147 gr German or Austrian NATO ammo

The most versatile and durable all-around rifle is probably a quality bolt-action . 30-06. It will put meat on the table, can snipe jackboots at 500 yards, wipe out rabbits in the garden with a light load, and generally serve any role you want a rifle to serve as long as you don't want to shoot fast.



If you want to shoot fast and be able to take large game easily, an autoloader in . 30-06 or . 308.



If you aren't planning to go after anything larger than whitetail deer or humans, an AK / AKS is a very good choice. I'd put AR-15 second, having owned both and shot them extensively for many years.



If you're looking for something reasonably priced that you can throw in the truck, walk around in the rain with, etc, a lever action in . 30-30 is awful hard to beat.



All that being said, what do I usually grab as my utility rifle? A Timberwolf . 357 magnum pump-action. Light, reliable, extremely fast, accurate, and FUN to shoot



If I could only have one of the above, it would be the . 30-06 bolt action, with the . 30-30 lever action running a close second.
