I purchased a 98. 5 2500HD ClubCab Cummins recently and was just wondering if anyone else has received a letter like mine. It is from a local(WinterHaven Dodge)stating that my vehicle VIN# has outstanding multiple recalls. #"S of recall are 688,788 and 8001. I called asking what they were,They said one was a diesel fuel line, and the other two are reflash updates of software for the PCM. My truck runs beautifully and I am very concerned with the necessity of these reflashes, but would like to have the fuel line recall addressed. I wonder if they would give me the fuel line parts so I can do this myself. I am very possessive with my truck concerning any wrench being turned on it. Any info would be great concerning these issues. This site is awesome! Thanks Alot!

Recall #8001 is the one that kills your power and mileage, don't let 'em do it! I wouldn't bother taking it in for the other ones either. The one for the fuel line is pretty meaningless... just make sure the rubber part of the fuel line doesn't split.

If you take it in for the fuel line, they will reflash it on you. Someone on this site mentioned they removed the datalink plug from their truck, and that may not be a bad idea.

The dealer is never going to give you the parts to fix yourself under warranty... too much liability.

Jenright, a small bike lock can be placed on the datlink port that is located below the steering column. The plug has a hole in the center, place the lock tight againt the face of the plug. This will prevent the dealer from installing the scan tool and preforming the reflash

Just a few questions please.

1) Is there a way to tell if the reflash has been done?

2) How much less milage on average?

3) Will one or more of the poere uprates reverse / improve on the truck if the reflash has been done?

Thank You

I just received a recall about my towing hitch. It stated that the hitch might contain cracks that may cause failure while towing. I can understand recalls on engine parts on a new engine design, but a recall on a part that has been around for a while and quite simple in design. The dealer I bought the truck from is not close by, so a recall on a part that is important, but really should never happen really frustrates me:mad:

Deer Butcher, If you don't tow then don't worry about it. As for those of us who do, if you get that recall I would suggest you get your hitch looked at. Mine needed work. Several guys before me received total replacement's. I tow heavy once in awhile and for once I was glad to get that recall. I had the chance to look into the problem and I was shocked at how the hitch failed. I would of never thought a problem could exist with a tow hitch.
