Picked up my trucko this afternoon with the ERG brakes and rear disc conversion. Pedal is really mushy and the stopping power is really weak.

Did the break-in process that is recommended and no change... ... . did it again... no change... . and again.

Even if the pads were not broke-in, I would'nt think the pedal should be mushy. In my experience, mushy pedal usually means the brakes need bled. The installer said he did it with a pressure bleeder.

What do you all think? As of now I think they need to be re-bled.

Foolkiller I Had Same Problem With Egr. I Even Replaced Master Cylinder. Put The Old Back On And Then The New One Again After Reading Directions About Bench Bleeding. Air Is Most Likely Your Problem. my Mistake Was Letting All The Old Fluid Out While I Did 100% Brake Job. Getting Afull Pedel Back Took Over Two Months. A Pressure Bleeding Tank Works Best But Proper Bench Bleeding Is A Must

poop. this truck is dangerous in it's present state. i'm assuming you mean manual bleeding by saying bench bleeding? i never seem to get what i paid for. it's going back to the installer in the morning. this is unacceptable.

thanks gilmer, jeff

Foolkiller Bench Bleeding Is In A Vice With Plastis Plugs Installed In Both Outlet Lines. then Only Push In About 1/2" To 1" And Release. Till You Dont Get Any Sign Of Air Coming Up In Plastic Resovier. Didn Work For Me , It Was Still Mushey. Removed Master Cylinder Again And This Time I Held It In My Hand And Depressed And Released Till I Could Not Push In Piston With All My Strenght. I Pressed Piston While Holding Master Cylinder In All Possition Even Upside Downand And I Got A Lot More Air Out. I Was Working On Cars Before I Started To Grammer School . Later In Life I Worked At 2 Differant Chev Delership And Never Had To Do This To A Master Cylinder. Like I Said I Fought This For Two Month And 6 Quarts Of Fluid . The Breaks Work Great Now. Good Luck And Let Me Know When You Get It Working. Pm Me Your Email And I Will Send Directions That Came With Master Cylinder, As I I Dont Know How To Do In Tdr. Walt

wgilmer,

i sent you a note... ..... i'm so ****** off. i'll be back at the installer in an hour to straighten this out. i've had such crappy luck with vendors and installers. what the hell? even after this issue is fixed... i still have to go back to the guy in a month to get one of the rear calipers replaced as the one installed is basically not the right one and is a loaner until egr sends the right one. they sent 2 right side calipers in the kit.

i never get what i paid for.

jeff

even after bench bleeding you still have to bleed with the lines going out of the MC and bleed all 4 wheels twice to do it right.

Rivercat: What You Said Is 100% Correct. The Mistake I Made And The Shop That Did Foolkiller Proably Made Was Allowing Master Cylinder Run Dry While Repairing Brakes And Installing Rear Disc. This Is When Air Got Trapped In Master Cylinder. I Have Installed A Lot Of Brakes And Master Cylinder In My Lifetime But My 99 Td Brought Me To My Knees!! Hope This Will Help Someone In The Future.

Sorry to hear about your soft pedal issues, but believe me the EGR brake system works when installed properly. Did you get the new SS brake lines? I installed my EGR system myself and had excellent results. The brake pedal is anything but soft, it is actually a little touchy compared to stock. I bought a pressurized bleeder system and actually flushed all the lines to get rid of the old fluid before I install the new components. I installed new lines and had no troubles. The break-in procedures really has nothing to do with peddle feel, it is only to seat the pads and new rotors.

I hope you get the whole thing worked out, when installed right their is no better braking system available for dodge owners.

V-knot I Agree. Great Brake System. But All Air Has To Go. I Will Be Testing Mine Next Month With A 3000 Mile Trip With 20000 T0 25000 Thousands Cvw All Down Hill With Auto And No Exhaust Break

thanks guys,

i've no doubt the brakes will be awesome once set up correct. the installer and i did a bleed together this morning and it's a lot better but i think it still has air in there. its good enough to rack up some miles and seat/break-in the pads. then i'll do a good bleed again. the installer is showing real concern over this which makes it all a little less stressful. i'm assured he's going to stay on top of it.

i'm hoping the break-in will make a big difference in the mean time.

and holy cr@p wgilmer, good luck with your trip.

take care, jeff

mushy pedal update,

i decided to hit the road with the brakes as is. left san diego about 2:00 this afternoon. just got i the habit of touching the pedal early and noticed some minor impovements in brakes along the way.

by the time i got to flagstaff, the brakes were 200% better. they are better than the stock set up now but i do think i still have some air in there.

will be bleeding them again in colorado.

take care, jeff
