Hey guys, My 98 24 valve started getting bad fuel mileage after a towing a load to vegas. I used to get 20-22 consistently but now i am only seeing 15-18. It wont blow smoke anymore like it used to. and power seems down. It has an ez, could that be going bad? I hope it is not the vp44 beggining to die. New lift pump 6 months ago so i dont think it is that. any help is appreciated

thanks

Sam Brown

It is possible to be a bad vp44. But if it is fuel pressure and you dont fix it you will soon have a bad vp44. It is very important to keep a eye on it. Also unhook the ez and see what differnce you get. You should only get a small power loss but almost the same milage as before.

I dont have a pressure gauge or code reader. Are any of these symptoms related to the vp44?

Can you check the codes on a 98 by cycling the ignition switch?

Cycle it 3 times and leave it in the on postition on the 3rd time. Read the codes in the odometer window.

You really need to find out what the fuel pressure is (important). If anything just to see if the LP is dying.

Yes, your lift pump can fail in six months. My last new one lasted a whole six weeks! Get some gauges on that truck and you would already know what is the matter.
