I understand why with a floating axle that you must remove the axle to get the brake drum off (like on my old Chevy) but I can get the drums off pretty easy on my dana 70 so why do people find it necessary to remove axles when replacing shoes?

You Don't

The drums simply come off - back off the adjustor - hit her a few times with a hammer - you know the routine - off they come - BTW - I have 127,000 and my rear shoes are at 75%.
