I was pulling a full load of horses down the interstate in 6th gear going about 60 MPH when I felt a jolt and lost all power. I started down shifting and would push on the gas and it was running rough. Trans would engage just fine. (6 speed). I got off the road and as soon as I dropped below 15 MPH or so she died. Check engine light came on. I pulled 2 codes P048 and P628 ( I think, left them in the truck with tow truck driver).

About 20 minutes later I started it, started right up. I was in an unsafe area so I crept back onto the freeway and it died about 2 miles later, same symptoms, but I was atleast off the road with horses. Turned over but wouldn't start after that. TOwed to my dealer, which was awesome and said they would try and get me back on the road.

One thing ticked me off, he asked If I had put gasoline in it... ...

SOunds like a fuel pump issue to me... . or something of that nature... any ideas????? THANKS!

yep it sounds like a fuel pump the one you have is on the block the dealer will replace it with a better in tank fuel pump. i havent heard of any failures yet. good luck :-laf

THANKS!! After posting on here I was reading in the search function about 3 EXACT stories to the letter. Lift pump LIft pump!!! I am glad I have a great dealer... thaks for the quick response

It might be interesting to know that I spoke with my service writer. Can't look at the truck till MOnday, but he said even over the phone that It sure sounded like the Lift pump!! He says they are doing 2-3 of these a week on 04 cummins models. I asked how long it would take to get the lift pump if needed, and he said they keep several of them stocked cause they are going thru them!!

I was wondering what the average milage is on the failing pumps, and, is this part covere under the 100k cummins or 36k or 70k drv trn? My 04 only has 8500k.

i hate to be rude but i have had it why cant these mf's get a lift pump to work. i am so dang mad i am tired of dealing with this issue it is a danger to me, you and our families. Cummins and DC you s%ck. I am tired of it. Anyone as tired of this issue as i am... ... . i need a moment

I agree, I was fortunate enough to be close to where I could pull off the road. I was pulling a 40,000 horse trailer and 150,000 worth of horses when she died. Never had a problem until this point. All I could think of is thank GOd I didn't break down going up or down a mountain!!!

Good Grief. They are still selling inferior lift pumps. Guess I'll have to up grade to a FASS when I finally get my 3rd Gen. It stinks to "fix" a new truck, but apparently, the newer electric lifts pumps aren't any better than the old ones. Not to mention 10 micron filter in a HPCR. Get with it Cummins/Dodge.

I guess they are all different. My failed, ---- at 272,000 miles. Now, three weeks later, my pressure limiting valve in the fuel rail failed. Started losing power, wouldn't get over 60 mph then died. It would start, after cycling the lift pump several times and idle fine but had no power at all. I did make it to the dealer where they found what it was. Hope that is really what it is, I was afraid it was the CP3. I've replaced one of them before and really don't need that expense right now.

Just got the truck back today! It has more power and runs stronger than ever before. I am wondering how long it was weak before she actually quit now!!! Dealer has 2 others they are doing the same thing on right now! Dealer said he has seen them come in with 17,000 and up to 100,000 with the same problem.

Excellent dealer however! Hemet Chrysler in Hemet CA.

I hope my mileage doesn't go down, I was getting 23 on the Highway empty at 70MPH, and 16 towing my 31 foot horse trailer hwy!! Maybe with a working pump it will drop??? Oo.

I have a customer in Hemet that owns a rental yard.

I am on my third lp right now, first one saw 89k (covered under the 100k warranty), next one went at 175k (86k miles later for you english majors;)) and now my 3rd, the intank unit has 35k, but a FASS will be supplying in a matter of weeks.

In my opinion...........

I would have to think that now that you have a properly working pump with appropriate pressure, you should make the same or better mileage. Wishin ya luck!

EB,

Warning: the ez on level 4 is hard on parts. . this info comes from Don M he said every truck he had seen with ez on high levels have injectors that are self boring themselves out as well as other problems. i would not run a pressure box by iteself and on high. i would run one in conjunction with tst and ez on low setting.

I've been running the EZ on level 2 for the past 6-8 months. It is off now, I took it off to see if maybe it was the problem, it wasn't. I haven't had any injector problems, yet, and the limiting valve is the first thing that might be caused by the EZ. I have replaced the CP3 pump at 149K and the lift pump about a month ago at 272K. This truck pulls a trailer every day and might just be getting tired. I'm hoping the 4500 and 5500 series aren't just a rumor. My dealer is supposed to have the part in today and I can go back to work.

I ran my last one for 416K+ so I am sure this one will also. I made a run today with about 18,000lbs behind me and the first thing I did when I got back was to put the EZ back on. I'm going to continue to run on level 2, but after running for 260,000 miles with one, running without one is pure torture. You really get used to the extra power.
