12 Valve Exhaust Brake

Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) VE Pump Gear Question

Driving today and my turbo started whining and motor was down on power.
Time to replace turbo?

I blew an intercooler hose off my 1995 12 valve unloaded one day. It had been leaking and tightening the clamps didn't work for long. Switched to the BD kit around 2008 and they have held fine, haven't blown one off yet even with regular 40 psi pulls. I switched to a bigger S300 turbo, so no idea how long the stock turbos last, but you gotta be getting close to needing a refresh.

The original turbo is worth several hundred thousand miles if taken care of properly. As to boots, I'm still running the stockers with 550K on them. For @ 150K miles of that, I frequently mad over 50psi boost with a Sled Puller 66 and some big injectors. Boots blowing off has a lot more to do with being properly installed than what brand they are or what they're made of.

The "whining" may be a boost leak. Check your boots, make sure they're on and have no holes. a blown intake gasket can cause a boost leak whistle, too.

Long overdue update by OP.
My problem was just a loose hose-clamp. Clamp slid back on the lower turbo hose. Hose was still attached, but the clamp sliding back allowed the hose to expand under pressure. Slid clamp back into place and tightened it up. All fixed and back to normal now. Boy what a difference that made. Simple loose clamp and the truck would fall on it’s face. Thought I had a bad turbo problem, glad I did not.
Thanks to you guys who suggested I check my hoses first.
