My 18 Gal. AUX tank Done!

Returning this to the top to report how things are going.



It is a little slow in fueling up, because of the tight elbow at the cap area you see in one photo, but not too bad.



you have to use the smaller Diesel pumps like conocco so you can make a slow flow.



Other than that the system is working great. I can go a month or more depending on how much I drive it with my truck driving job and I calculate I can go 500 miles towing and almost 900 solo...

Aux fitting on main tank

Hey Eric,



I just hooked up my aux tank and tried to use that fitting on top of the main tank sending assembly. When I try to pump, it just leaks fuel all around it. It appears that fitting isn't "drilled out" like yours is. Did you use the one with the little rubber boot over it? The one at the front sticking straight up? Did you have to open it up with anything first?

No, Mine was fine... .



Yes I did y=use that little fitting with the boot on it. If it was blocked, I don't see any reason for the boot..... But yeah thats what i did



Don't know what is happening with yours... .



Try sticking a little wire down it and see if the block is right at the top or down in.



I am thinking that since it is a Aux fitting, It has to overcome the volume in the tank. Like filling from the bottom so it would take a bit of pressure to do. Did you use a clamp on the hose?



If so, then I don't know what to say... .

Thanks for the reply. I never stuck anything down in there, so I can't be sure. I'll try that. I just re-used that little spring clamp that was on the boot. I bet it isn't strong enough for that much pressure then.



Have you seen any issues with filling via that port? I'd like to use that port to fill and tie my aux tank vent into the main tank vent. That way I have a closed system.



Oh, one more question. Do you seen any negative issues with using galvanized pipe fittings instead of brass?

Yeah I think the Spring clamp is not tight enough for doing a back flow. Is only good for low psi draw.....



I don't see any poss. drawback on the Cast iron elbow I use for fueling. It just comes in contact with the fuel when filling... ... . I also have that 30 micron filter after the main tank so if there was some junk, it would catch anything there.....



My Aux tank with a Holly 140 GPH pump takes liek15-20 min or so to completely transfer the Aux so I guess it is pushing a little PSI. s



I did the same thing you want to. I tied the Aux Vent to the Fill vent for the main tank. so now when it transfers, air transfers as well when liquid goes in.

Does anyone know of a metal aux fuel tank that will fit in the spare tire space under the box of the same dimensions as Eric has used?



I want to use this tank for used veg oil, so the tank needs to be metal -- the oil needs to be warmed up or it won't pump.



I have a 1999 short box 2500, and use it mostly to carry a camper, so an in-the-box tank won't work.

You might try looking at a summit racing catalog or search for "fuel cell" on the summit website. They have various steel, aluminum, and plastic tanks geared to the racing crowd that might work for your application.

Transfer Flow makes a "aft-axle tank" and so does Aero tanks.

I believe they make aluminum marine tanks.

Get one or two of those battery warmers and youre in business.

I used a 32 gallon Blazer tank I got online from somewhere. Then a Summit Racing pump and filter. Worked great for several years. I've traded since this setup. Let me know if you need any details and I'll try to dig it up.
