US SAE-J2807: How GVWR and GCWR Are Determined

My wife and I are still excited to own a great truck. Our 2007.5 3500 dually with all its modifications included a well tuned Smarty gave us great fuel mileage yesterday. We loaded up our Cedar Creek 38EL with a full tank of fuel. (56 gallons) and drove from central NC to Emerald Isle, NC to set it up for my daughter and family for 10 days. My truck has 19.5x245s and 4.30 gears. It runs 2000 RPMs at 70 MPH. Mainly drove interstate 85 & I40. Overhead ran between 14-16 MPG. Coming home mty we ran same roads at mostly 65-75 MPH. Coming home the overhead ranged between 19-23 MPG. When we pulled back into home fuel station it took 44.7 gallons. Hand calculation was exactly 13 MPG. Best mileage ever in my truck. Reel Happie.

Nice combo!

So 11 going and 15 returning for an average of 13?

Not exactly sure how that works. In 10 days I will be making the same trip but in reverse. Driving mty down hill from central NC to beach and uphill from beach. This time I will fill up on both ends.

IH85 sux big ones. I hate that road. Charlotte to Atlanta is a lesson in pain. 0200 or 1400. Any day.

IH40 has its bad areas. At least Asheville east it’s a beaut.

Trick on MPG measurements is to let pump fill to FIRST auto shutoff. Same pump, ideally.

Time of day (traffic volume) will have greatest effect on MPG.

Any undue time spent in left lane counts against your man card. The health of the road (the flow) is the right lane. The only travel lane.

Let the computer handle the drivetrain (constant cruise control). All you do is to steer or brake as required (not, “as desired”). Truck is boss.

Best effect is right below commercial traffic. 62-64/mph.

Since I can deadhead the same roads at 12+ MPG with 579 Pete & 53’ van scaling an Empty combined 35k at 64-mph with low traffic, try some finesse with that baby stroller. You might be surprised.
