NV5600 with 150,000 miles.

1st pops out of gear on decceleration.

2nd grinds going into gear unless you get it just right...

3rd works great!

4th was stuck in 4th last night, now it wont go back into 4th.

5th grinds on up shift and downshift all the time.

6th pops out of gear on decceleration.

I have always used the factory fluid and changed it at least every 50K miles. I just changed it to see if it would help my situation - but no luck.

I have searched the posts and most nv5600 posts are about people arguing what fluid works best...

Is this trans easy to rebuild? Should I have it done locally or ship to a specialty shop? Should I buy a reman or used? Change to a new style 6 spd?

any advise? Also this is pending the insurance company's view about the baseball sized hail that pounded the truck the other day. Maybe its totaled and I can look at a Gen 3.

I would wait out the insurance co's word.

The transmission sounds like the classic synchrinizer syndrone. You should be able to get a local transmission shop to do it. They are not to bad to replace. But be sure the transmission shop has done a 5600 before they are a bit different inside. They have a very different shift rail setup inside.

How is your clutch and pilot bearing holding up??? I just put in a new SB into my 6 speed at 170,000 and it made a big difference in shifting. It was getting hard to engage now it is smooth.

Good luck and hopfully it does not cost you an arm and a leg

I have no experience with the 6 speed but I do see you are in MN so if you have it rebuilt or get a reman unit be very leary of the shop in Zumbrota on 52 south of the cities. My dealer gets all their remans through there and I was an unlucky soul who bought one through my dealer who has had to drop it out 5 times in the last year because their remans fell apart. All warrantied except my labor. I do have a 5 speed and maybe they are better with 6 speeds but just figured I would give a heads up on them. Best of luck!

Chris

Thanks for the heads up on that shop...

Currently I am waiting for the insurance man... if I repair it I'll be getting a fresh SB for it for sure.

offically looking for trans and clutch

Ok now I am in the market for a NV5600, clutch, hood and roll pan. I am looking at rebuilt 5600's from a Phoenix hard parts, does anyone have any experience with them?

5600 Reman

Well it looks like I am going to get my trans from a rebuilder in Zumbrota, there are two different rebuilders there though, both with NV5600's on the shelf ready for me to come pick up. Its about 15 miles from my folks farm so at least I have that going for me. I hope I pick the right company either Midwest Transmission or Zumbrota Bearing... I called all over the US looking for these, good luck to anyone that needs one in the future! The status of the NV5600 parts is getting worse. It looks like my truck is going in for a drivetrain and then body overhaul in another month I should have a 'new' 2001 again.
