I use Howe's every tank-including summer. This AM, truck would start but die after 15 to 30 seconds. Temps the last couple nights have been -15, around +5 during the day. The truck has been sitting about 5 days without being run, thogh i did have it plugged in. Could this have been the main reason? Could the Howe's have "settled out"? Any way, I dumped a double dose of Power Service that I had lying around in the tank, started the truck and let it idle (this was after letting the sun shine down for a couple hours-temp was 0) for about 5 minutes. Seems to be OK now. So now I'm thinking of going with stanadyne, or amalgamated. Amalgamated seems complicated to order-is there a formula they have pre-mixed, or do you have to get a custom blend? What is the cost compared to Stanadyne? I remember a thread on this from a year or so ago, but 45 minutes of searching and i couldn't find.

Never had any trouble with Howes. Did you run the double dose, as apposed to amount you run in the summer? You are supposed to use more in the winter.

Largest truck stop here in Spudville says HOWE's is the One for the big rigs? Anyone using HOWE's in the CTD? Thanks, Doc

Yep use Howes in the wife's Jetta TDI too. no issues.

yep, increased dosage as lable says. I never had a problem last year. Starting to think it has more to do with the truck sitting for a week with no circulation through the fuel lines

If mine sits for more than about 4 days it is a little hard to start, like a little air in the lines. Might take 10 seconds vs a couple fo revolutions. If run every couple of days, then no problem.

I use Stanadyne and get 5 gal for $105 from SouthEast Power Systems in Orlando.

I run howes in both pickups, is says on the bottle that they will pay the towing bill if you gell up, it looks like there is a bunch of hoops to jump through, like must have the vehicle signed up with Howes each winter, and save all your reciepts to prove that you have been using it in all tank fulls, and a bunch of other stuff. but haven't had any problems yet running #2 with Howes, probably mixing it a little stronger than recommended, but it says on the bottle stronger mix doesn't hurt anything, could be just for marketing though. I suppose that it is possible that it would settle out after sitting a period of time though, I am not sure about that, but just make sure you are adding enough to you tank.

had this problem in my 03 the first winter in michigan. it froze up 3 times in temps less than +10F. fuel wasn't gelled. ran one can of "diesel" dry gas through tank and haven't had a problem since. FWIW "water in fuel" light never came on. there is also a thread on this forum by "DCTECH", if you do a search on this problem about a recessed return line fitting, on the fuel tank, on the LWB trucks, that is letting water into the fuel tank.

OkeyO,

I had the same problem recently, I believe it was water in the fuel causing the filter to freeze. On the advice of others here I used some Power Service Diesel 911. Remove the filter, drain the canaster, fill with Diesel 911, reinstall the filter and start the truck. 911 is a water dispersent, so I added 16 oz to the tank and haven't had any more problems.
