My All Terrains suck should I go MT's

I only tow about 10 times a year but Im not very happy with my AT's in the snow. Do alot of you guys run MT's on you tow rig. I'm stock right now and I was considering the Nitto Grappers AT's(34X11) for my new tire. But its only an AT. Do any MT have the weight rating for the kind of towing I doing. I tow about 8K 10 times a year. What sizes do you run???

MT's

I run 255-85-16 BFG Muds, they are very good in mud, OK in snow, they are very good in snow IF you have them siped. I always thought they(the Mt's) were better than the AT's but some guys on here (TDR) have said that the AT's are better in the snow. My buddy has at's on his chevy 1/2 ton, and we both noticed that my dodge does much better on the roads when there is 4" + on the road (before it gets plowed off) but that might just be because the dodge front end is alot heavier. He often has a hard time getting moving where my truck just idles away while he sits and spins all 4 tires. .



As for ratings, I know the BFG mt's do not have a good tow rating (range d for 255-85's)

I don't think you can get a MT in E range. I have Nittos Grapplers AT and love them, I have not done any mudding yet but in the snow they have done very well!

I always had real good luck with the BFG all terrains. I also ran the Goodyear ATR(?) I think that was the name. It was a smooth riding tire, but still did nicely in snow and mud

What brand of AT are you running? Not all AT's perform the same. MT's are extreme for much road driving, but maybe your into extreme?? I have alway had good luck with BFG AT/KO's, they are excellent in the snow. The Nittos are good looking tires

My 315 BFG AT's are load range D... . still have a higher weight capacity than the factory Michelins which were load range E.

I have BFG M/T's (255-85-16) on my Ford. Great in mud and really haven't had any problems in snow. Tire wear has been good. Probably have around 20k on the tires and still look like new.

Cooper all terrian ST in 255-85-16. they are awesome in all conditions! I'll never go back to BFG's!

Ok, I have run 255/85 BFG MTs on two trucks. i liked them and they excelled in mud and DEEP snow. They pretty much sucked on ice as they have no siping at all. I can not speak for the MT KM as they one I had were the original style. I now run 295/75 BFG at and they are great in the snow and all around. They are d rated but have a higher load rating than the stock tires. I have had both michelin ltx MS and AS as stock tires on my trucks. They both were a joke in the snow. I will this week be buying a set of Cooper ST 255/85 for dedicated snows as the BFGs are not as good as they once were having worn more quickly than I would like due to steering wander and a cracked wheel. I am putting the coopers on 98 steel chrome wheels as I want them on a separate set of wheels and the 8 inch wide alloys are a little to wide of a 255/85 in my opinion.



I think MT's are not the direction you want to go based on you discription.



What are your AT's??

What are the cooper St's like?? Ive never owned coopers before. What is there ride quality like, how well do they do off road, snow ect... .



Im torn between the Nitto At 295/75/16 or the BFG MT 295/75/16 I think the mesure 34"X11 just a bit smaller then the 315 or 35"



A big bonus is I will have a higher top speed. Its 100exactly now and its sucks being beaten my just about every other car on the road. I have 4:10's

I am currently running the Cooper Discovery A/T tires. They also seem like I nice tire. The only snow I have had to try them in was about 10"s. Other than that, they have about 13-15000 miles of highway use. They are also a smooth ride for highway use

Wow, I'm suprised how many of you don't like Michelins. I run LTX M/S on all 15 of my work trucks. I did try the LTX A/T (?) on my own truck, a little more aggressive tread, but they chunked out badly running up & down railroad right-of-way roads (3" gravel tears up tires). I wouldn't run anything else now. I have tried, but other tires just haven't held up to the abuse and still gotten any kind of mileage. JMO

The LTX M/S are the top rated one on Tire Rack. I have had the on my 2000 CTD and on a Landcruiser. Good tires but when my Goodyears on my new CTD wearout I'm going to try the Michelin XPS Tractions

I run BFG All Terrains exclusively. I have 6 on my truck, and 4 on the Burban. My wife gets 80K miles on them on her Burban on the 16" E rated tires. At first I was upset with the price of the 16's, but when she got aboot dbl the miles out of them, I was a happy camper. Only run 50# on a half ton truck or anything else that you just use to get groceries. My wife hauls 1000# loads in her Burban regularly with them at 50# and it goes super!



I run 80# in the truck, but I haul much hevier loads, and also the snowplow (if/when it gets used) will really sock it to an under inflated tire. CHECK YOUR PRESURE after you leave the dealership! I find that they seem to come home inflated to 32#. (I think they hire only 6 grade dropouts at the tire dealers sometimes)



The more aggressive tread of the Mud Terrain will do better in deeper snow or mud. But for snowpacked and icy roads, the less aggressive tread pattern of the AT is much better. How many miles do you drive your truck through 6" of snow?

I have ran both BFG MT's and AT's. The mud terrains work real well off road, in the snow and mud. On the pavement with two to four inches of snow(pre plow) the AT's excell. As for hauling and towing with BFG's, I have had 26,000 + lbs. No problems, just not much tire life. Seems to wear the tread a little faster. The Bfg AT's say they can hold more weight than the Michellen LTX's that were E rated... ... ... ... ... .....

i have 92k miles on my mich. ms tires. and with the winters in minnesota and the smowmobile trips to michigan i can not complain. with snow you will not have traction. . think about it. . snow is powdered ice... . how much traction can you get from ice. .



just drive on one ov our frozen lakes and gun it. if you don't just set there and spin your wheels you might just start doing donuts.



if you need traction go with limited slip or a locker axle... ... .....



remember... 4x4 can not make you stop faster. just steer clear of trouble

I read an article comparing BFG AT's vs MT's and the AT's was the better performing tire in almost every condition (street, sand, snow). The MT's only had a slight advantage in deep mud.
