Competition How do I dyno

Hey Guys,

Got a dyno event coming up soon and on our way out there I'm going to race my buddy in his d-max. He's givin' me a lot of crap about how fast his truck is blah, blah, blah, so I want to shut him up for good. It's an '04 with an afe and edge juice attitude. Wondering what settings I should run to toy with him good:-laf ... plus I'd love to crush him twice in a day. . once on the road and again on the rollers:D

Just do it and take pictures. :-laf

You'll get him for sure! My brother had a 02 Duramax with exhaust, Juice, AFE... . couldn't even see him in the rearview. LOL The 04 model has a little more muscle, but not even close with your mods. I would run SW2, 5x4. My truck just feels like it is gonna break on these settings.

If you really want to throw down some big numbers on the dyno... . set Smarty to stock & run 5x4 on the comp. That is what everyone says works best. If you have a week before the big dyno day... . send the comp to edge for a drag upgrade.

Do I really need the drag upgrade with the smarty? I'm sure it has been covered before in another thread, but i thought the drag was only worth it for 5x5. I think the smarty pulls to 3500 all around.

Thanks for the responses. . i really want to wax his tail and be done with it:-laf . I know that d-max's tend to be quick so i guess I'll half to boost launch... damn;) . As for the dyno, I have two runs so i will try 5x4-smarty 8 and 5x4 stock and see what happens. Not really sure where I'll be, but pre smarty and injectors I was 375ish. Oh yeah. . gonna have chris video tape the race so I'll post it up here once I stop laughing at himOo.

Guys have tried SW8, 5x4... . they lost between 20-30hp. I am antsy to try SW2, 5x4..... my truck just feels stronger. I forget who posted that SW9, 5x4 gave the best numbers, but I'm scared to try SW9 with my comp... . too much timing. The Drag will fuel to 3200... . regular comp defuels at 2700. The drag will lengthen your powerband.

not to sound stupid here but won't the smarty fuel to 3500 as well? Plus I don't know for sure but I think most dyno runs don't run that kind of rpm... If I'm wrong please enlighten me. . I've always been confused why one would buy the smarty and spend money on the drag upgrade:confused:

Where and when on the dyno event? I've got a drag comp that you could borrow for one of your runs to compare a regular comp to a drag comp back to back...

That'd be great if you don't need it. Still wondering if it is stronger than the smarty. It's May 5 at Wydick diesel in Fremont. It's an all day event and they give out cash prizes and such for different classes and such. Not that I have that much power, but I want to post the best numbers possible. . oh and smoke my buddies d-max:p

Well you can compare the comp to smarty & maybe get different results, but I can feel Smarty drop off around 2600-2700. I noticed a difference in my truck through the entire rpm band after the drag upgrade. I thought I was going crazy. I took my brothers edge comp... . plugged it into my truck & did some testing. The drag comp has more power through the entire rpm band... . not alot, but more.

Your set up is similar to mine. With the drag comp you will be upper 400's to around 500 hp. I just put down 531hp about a month ago and 5x4 did better than 5x5 on mine,hp was same but torque went up by 30 if I remember right. I left smarty out of the mix that day. keep us informed on all the events. :)

That's good to know. . many think I should be around 520 with the mods but we'll see. I put down 375/790 without the injectors and smarty so I'm planning on making two runs both with comp on 5x4 and smarty on 8 with one and stock with the other. If I get the chance I will also run sw2 & 5x4 to see what that yields. . can't wait:-laf

Well the dyno day was fun! Unfortunatly I didn't get to race him because it was pouring rain on the way out and way back. However he only posted 398/814 and he left before seeing me put down 524/1084. That's too bad I wanted to see his reaction to that. . bet he won't talk so much trash now:-laf He's already wanting to get the "hot" upgrade on the juice, but he still won't stand a prayer:p Besides, now that I made 500, don't you have to go for 6:-laf

Thanks guys, I ran the smarty on 8 and comp on 3x4 for the first run and 4x4 for the second. I wish I'd hade three runs to try 5x4, but maybe next time. The 3x4 yielded 518/1084 and 4x4 was 524/1080. Good enough for me as I was only wanting to be over 5.

Thats good numbers for sure. :-laf How are your egts at wot with the Smarty/comp stack? My friend is thinking of doing the same setup as you & just wondering what you are seeing... . also what boost levels you are getting.
