Hello All:

Well, now I can join the thros of dissatisfied Dodge Ram 6. 7 owners. My 2007 3500 quad cab left me dead on the road yesterday. I was in busy city traffic and heard some very funny growling and squealing noises under the hood. No lights came up on the dash, just heard a bunch of noise. Went to get into the turning lane to get off the road and I had no power steering!!!!!! Tried to slow down and I had no power brakes!!!!!!

Ever try to steer and stop and 8000 pound truck with no power assist? NOT VERY FUN!!!!!!! That really ups the "pucker factor" for you when you try to stop that much truck without power assist.

Finally got it off the road (I don't know how I was able to do that) and found a huge trail of red fluid all the way to where I parked it. Fluid was spewing out from underneath the truck in all directions.

Obviously I blew the power steering pump. And, since the power steering pump provides boost for the brakes, I lost them too!!!!!! GOTTA LOVE IT!!!!!

Oh, and it was 18 degrees outside. Waited two hours for the tow, and dropped it off at the dealership after hours with a letter explaining the problem.

I will let you guys know how it turns out.

Truck is 1. 5 months old and has only 1375 miles on it.

No modifications made to the truck. Bone stock.

Well, that's my rant. Anybody else have a similar experience?

from all the post's I have read I think there has been 1 or 2 08's that have had trouble and the rest have been 07 or 07,5 hope it's a easy fix for you sorry to hear that you are haveing troubles .

keep us posted on what they find .

Sorry to hear of your problem neelre. Sounds like a defect from the factory. Your experience has happened to quite a few members on this forum but usually on older, higher-mile trucks. The design obviously has some drawbacks. Hope they get you fixed up.

I don't know if the power steering is the same on 06's or not, but I'm on my second gearbox and third set of hoses and one pump. (23,000 miles) Good luck man. When my warranty is up I will be having some goodyear extreme coldweather hoses and PSC pump and gearbox to put on.

The hydroboost system on the Dodge's has been in use since '98.

That's when they tied powersteering and braking assist together off the same pump.

From what I have seen here, either your PS pump will last nearly forever, or it will fail within' 5k miles.

Had that happen on my 05 D/A company truck with 1500 miles and is not very common for all makes, sorry yours failed. If there's any bright side to this, after they replaced mine on the GMC, there were no more problems. :)

Power steering pumps on class 8 trucks... have a filter and a change interval on the oil... . they use mostly engine oil so that the tech can change the power steering fluid at the same time as an oil change with the same fluid... And a lot of the smaller pumps have a filter inside the pump... nothing more than a filter like most automatic transmission...

The key to pump life is oil cooling and changing the oil... it could be there is some excessive heat that the engineers don't really understand that is causing pump failure...

Yep same problem when I had my 05. The good thing is it didn't go all at once. Figured out what was going on and dealer replaced the entire system under warranty. Parts replaced were steering gearbox, powersteering pump and the hydrobooster foer the brakes, all the remaining lines were flushed. Didn't have any more trouble. Both my 07s have been trouble free. Don't blame the 6. 7 just for the heck of it, it already seems to have a bad reputa... . Wait I seem to recall the same sort of the engine did it things when the CR came out in 03.

At least its not something to blame on the 6. 7. The Power steering pumps are probably made by some other company bought by Chrysler.

Sounds like you're just getting the bugs worked out of you're new rig. So far, not a common failure being reported, so was probably a fluke. The downside is it was an inconvenience. The upside, is it should have been fixed under warranty and like said above, the pump "should" last a long time now (if there wasn't a blockage in the system that caused it). Every generation of trucks have had their rants, and people like us are finding fixes that are making all generation trucks into good rigs. Just takes a little while.

Well, now I can join the thros of dissatisfied Dodge Ram 6. 7 owners.

Careful there! Seriously, I don't think the intent of your post is to illustrate a failing of the 6. 7 motor, but a failure of the accessory that happened to be attached to the 6. 7 motor. Guilt by association?

it wasn't the 6. 7 that rammed you , it was the powersteering system . Lord knows we don't need anything else to blame on the 6. 7 . that just adds fuel to the fire for the people that like to trash our trucks .

Were you using the fuel addtives you recently posted about?

Yes, I just started using power service about 500 miles ago. The truck engine runs better on it, just not the power steering!!!!!

I know the failure of the pump had nothing to do with the motor. However, I do wonder if dodge changed the pump design for the 2007. 5 model year as a part of their redesign under the hood of these trucks. If they did, then I can blame it on the new design!!!!!! If they didn't, then I can blame it on bad luck!!!!!!

Everybody:

I am not that mad about the power steering failure. I know that it has nothing to do with the 6. 7 motor. However, the 2007. 5 being a new model year for the new motor and all, it did not really help much to raise my confidence in the reliability of these new trucks.

The truck is a whole package -- motor, trans, body, interior, electrical, suspension and all. People usually think of a truck as the whole package. If a part on a truck fails, whether it be motor, trans, or some other component, then people tend to think the truck let them down.

However, I am very happy with the truck. I just wished I could have said that I drove it 50K without troubles.

Have not heard back form the dealer on this yet. But, I will call them tommorrow and let you all know how it works out.

If you're feeling disappointed in the reliability of your new truck spend an hour or so tonight browing the Ford site. It will improve your satisfaction.
