Tripple Dog Mixed with JUICE?

After a couple of years of doing various things to my truck, I finally took it to a dyno for some tuning. Here is my setup: TST 03 twins program, a Bullydog Power Pup, Diesel Dynamics 100hp nozzles, stock cp3, and an MP8, that I'm not too sure is working right. My turbo is an HTT sled-puller 66 with a 12cm exhaust housing. I tow about 10000 lbs with this truck, occasionally. I also have a Helix 2 cam, and a walbro fuel pump with a perma-cool 2 micron filter after the stock canister. The Walbro is set at 18 lbs, and never dropped. My rail pressure gauge consistently read around 25000 at WOT on all of the runs, after it caught back up. There was a dip between 2200 and 2500 rpm, and I watched the rail pressure drop from around 10000 to about 5000, and then it took off. My EGT's would hit about 1300, until power dropped, when I had the TST settings too high. Then it would hit about 1500. On the highest HP runs, the EGT's stayed around 1200. My boost was running up to about 55 lbs on the good runs. I made 17 runs, including a couple with a Smarty. I didn't run the Power Pup in the tow mode, but I ran the truck without the Power pup at all for the first 5 runs. I would have liked to try a few more settings, but we were running out of time.

Here are the results:

Bullydog TST MP8 HP/TQ

Stock 0/0 0% 347/634

Stock 0/0 50% 350/636

Stock 3/2 50% 480/878

Stock 6/3 50% 379/781

Stock 4/2 50% 502/950

Performance 0/0 50% 395/745

Performance 3/2 50% 497/745

Performance 5/2 50% 395/781

Performance 4/2 50% 528/903

Extreme 0/0 0% 482/884

Extreme 2/2 0% 553/990

Extreme 0/0 50% 485/862

Extreme 3/2 50% 555/956

Extreme 4/1 50% 481/876

These are the smarty runs, on level 8, were 459/812 and 463/828. With the TST thrown in on level 3/2, the numbers were 558/978.

These numbers were all done with the SAE correction factor. Uncorrected, they were slightly higher, i. e. the 558/978 number would have been 571/1003. Air temp was 72*, humidity at 6%, and altitude was 650 ft.

When I first got the truck, my stock numbers were 259/474. When I added the power pup, which was my first mod, my numbers were 374/745, all else being stock.

I have also documented my mileage since I've owned the truck. I have 46000 miles now, and my average is just over 18, including my towing miles, (about 10000). My mileage dropped about 1 mpg with the addition of the turbo.

I just had mine on the dyno with only the smarty on mine sw9 and put down 425/875 stock turbo, stock injectors etc. Just intake and exhaust has been done.

I had the exact symptom on my truck. once we added the modded CP3 - that dip was about 90% gone on the dyno graph (and on the street)

it's the carbon build up from the way he drives. :-laf :D Actually, I think Jim has it nailed down and plans to make some changes to see if it helps.

Yep, Tomey, I think that's the next step. Just haven't decided how far I want to take it. Time for me to start saving some coin.

jim i think something is still holding your truck back.

I think you're right, Robert.

I am looking at a helix2 cam how do you like yours i have sent don a pm but no response. I am guessing you are thinking of a cp3 mod? That will be one of my next. With a cam i hope.

If I had it to do over again, I probably wouldn't do it. I never really noticed much difference before, and after the install. It's very subtle.

So you feel you could still reach the same power level with out the cam. And be able to keep egt in check! Other people have stated that the power comes in sooner and stays longer. And cooler egt. So im guessing you have not seen these results. Good knowledge. Thanks for the truth and not some salesmans hype! I know everyones truck react different to mod's so no need to flame me! Just nice to get a honest answer.

The cam seemed to help mine out a lot. :D Jim has ridden in my truck and knows how it lights the chargers. :D For some reason he hasn't seen the same results. Persoanally, I think he just doesn't run it hard enough to let it breathe. :-laf

What do you expect? It took a lot of fuel to cross those mountains at 80 MPH trying to get there by 9 AM only to have the owner show up after lunch. :-laf

That is a good point. I don't keep my foot buried in the fllorboard all the time. :D I will say I think it helped the EGT's more when towing. Wade's truck was the first real load I've had on it, since I put the cam in. And I definitely think the truck runs a lot stronger since then. Must have cleaned some carbon out. :D

It didn't come from my truck. My truck doesn't smoke. :D Yet. :D
