Changing OEM Fuel Filter

What happened:

Was making a run from Victoria,Tx to Ft. Worth, Tx. I had just stopped and gotten fuel and was back up to hiway speed and the engine died like I had turned the key off. I was able to coast off the hiway and into a small truck stop parking lot.

What I have cked and done:

I had just gotten fuel so I thought maybe dirty fuel, changed filter, no difference. When I cked codes, I had four that were not there Monday.

P-0113 intake air charge temp sensor high

P-0193 fuel rail pressure sensor high

P-0237 turbo boost pressure low

P-0341 camshaft position sensor performance/rationality

I have also cracked a injector line to see if any fuel was getting to the injector, it is. I also took the edge box off and hooked it up stock. No difference. The engine will turn over, but will never hit. I now have the truck at a shop back at home to be cked out Monday. A friend came up to pick me and my truck and trailer up. (and deliver my load to Ft. Worth)

A special thanks to Tommy Hewitt of Centramatic, a TDR advertiser, for stopping by and looking up the codes for me Thursday night and calling me back and then coming back Friday and pulling my truck up on my trailer so I could get it back home. Thanks Tommy.

It was suggested that possibaly the Edge box might have fried the sensors. Anyone else had a similar problem? I'm throwing it up to the forum, anyone got any ideas?

I think I would look at the cam sensor since the EZ has nothing to do with it and the EZ is now off. The fuel Rail pressure and boost are both things the EZ fools to make power. No idea why charge air temp sensor would be high.

Vaughn, I'm right at 150k now, can't go ck it because it is inside a shop. Hopefully, it is just the cam sensor like the earlier posts said. If so, I should be back on the road by Tuesday at the latest. I update my mileage at the first of each month. I do know one thing, if the cam sensor caused this, when it goes out, you are done. Like turning off the key, it's dead and it won't hit a lick. :{

I don't know Cummins electronics very well, but I do know Mack V-mac electronics which is a similar engine management system. To start the engine both sensors are required, but once it's running I don't think the cam sensor is used any longer and the computer has a way of getting by even without the crank sensor by means of a default "map" and will limp home with limited performance and a malfunction lamp on.

On my 99 the crank sensor wire came unplugged, I lost the Tach and Crusie Control but truck ran fine for three days till I got it to a dealer and they plugged it back in.

I am willing to bet it is one of the many sensors. I am surprised that any sensor caused a complete shutdown. Good luck and keep us posted EB. :)

Ok guys here is what it is. The main injector pump. The lift pump was doing its job, but the main pump was putting out zero fuel. Complete failure.

My opinion, if you are going to tow heavy with a box, edge, tst, any of them, I think you need to run a pusher pump of some kind. Again, my opinion. Any comments?

By the way, all the codes went away, the tech said they were probably caused by coasting down and trying to starting the engine by putting it in gear. Nothing shows as codes now.

I got rid of my 03 for this very reason. Mine how ever never left me stranded. It started acting up and the dealer after 8 days realized that it was the pump and replaced and then the replacement started acting up again after 3 months 7k miles later, so I traded it in right away. I love my 600, non of the problems people are complaining about other than the milage is 1 mpg off from the 03.

OK, here are the end results. It was the main pump, that was the only part replaced. P/N R5104877AA Price of the pump $1075. 00, a remanned pump. The diagnosed problem, "no pressure coming out from the high pressure pump. Replaced high pressure pump, test drove OK"

I was told the codes that were set earlier were probably set by coasting down and trying to restart the truck. Truck shows no codes now.

To milehigh. o. How did your truck start "acting up" mine was running great then just shut off. No stumble or miss or anything like that, it just shut off. How many miles on your truck. Mine has right at 150k. I still feel like a pusher pump like a HASS or an AirDog will solve the problem. Just my opinion.

I'm back on the road, that is all that matters to me. If I can go another 150k with no problems, I don't think anyone can fuss to much about that.

Dead Pump

EB, Had Same Problem, 105,000 Miles On Truck, Truck Had Been Giving Some Warning For About A Month. New Pump At North Plains Cummins In Mesquite TX Sells For $950. Pump Shop Installed For $275. Shop Claimes Transfer Pump Is Fine But Makes Me Wonder Because The Warning We Got Was When Fuel Tank Was Low Of Fuel.

I guess it wouldn't be a bad thing to monitor low (transfer pump) pressure like the 2G guys do. Sounds like the same type of failure they experience with their injector pumps.

Looks like I've got some other problems. This morning before I started the truck I cked codes. I had two. P-0480 and P-2509. The 480 code has to do with the cooling fan circuit but the 2509 code could cause me some problems. It says PCM/ECM Power Input Signal Intermittent. Anyone familiar with this one.

There is one thing I know of that will cause random codes- bad grounds! Check them with a good DVOM at the computer connectors.

EB,

My truck only had 11k miles on it when it started acting up. I park my truck in a parking garage and how I noticed this issues was when driving thru the garage I would driving basically at idle, but if I gave it a little gas and then let off the rpm's, the rpms would go to idle as normal but then all of a sudden it would drop down to almost 0 and just about die, then it would surge up to 1200-1500 rpms and then resume to normal. This issue was getting worse and feeling like one day this thing is just going to flat out die on me I took it in and well 8 days later it was fixed. This was ok for about 2-3 months and started again and thats when it was traded. The truck had 17k on it when I traded it.

Funny thing is who ever bought it has had it in the shop a few times cause for some reason Dodge still shows me as the owner and I get the survey things from them asking how I was treated at the dealer when it was getting serviced.
