Ever since I gutted my cat when my truck is at idle I get a real bad eye tearing smell of diesel fuel at the back out of the exhaust. I backed off on the starwheel(like what was reccommended to me before )but to no avail. I have owned diesel trucks before and know that the exhaust does have an odor but this is VERY STRONG. Is it because of my gutted cat or am I running rich for another reason?? HELP I AM RUNNING OUT OF VISINE (LOL) #ad

That smell is from not having the KAT doing its job--I pulled mine off to see if it made a difference in the performance of my truck and I couldn't tell any difference so I put it back on--can't stand the smell/////

2 Questions

1. ) Do you have an AFC spring kit installed?

2. ) Did you ever adjust the no-load fuel
setscrew on the back of the AFC housing
under the tamper proof cover?

If you answered yes to any of these, it sounds like your no load fuel adjustment is too rich. You need to back out the stud a few turns. You'll need a 3mm allen wrench and a 10mm wrench for the lock nut. Back it out, maybe 2 turns until the exhaust cleans up. This will only effect idle & no boost fueling. This sounds like what you are smelling. It shouldn't effect idle speed or quality. Leave your star wheel fully retracted like it is. You may notice your low end is not as strong as it was when you back the stud out. But the engine will burn real clean.


If the tamper proof cover is still on the stud, forget doing what I wrote above.

Hemi- the answer is no to both of your questions

Missouri- me and fuel mileage has always been a sore subject(I get about 10 mpg consistent) also I get a little puff of black smoke if i stomp on the the pedal in park but that is about it. This weekend I am gonna try to change the prefilter screen and see if that could be clogged.

RedNut, WOW, that milage is bad. I too have one of the last 12valvers, set up about like yours, milage is much different, getting 17-19. Have you corrected for larger tires when calculating milage?

Jim; do all city driving, no long highway trips. Never been to Arizona but it would appear to me alot of you guys enjoy the wide open roads with minimal stop and go. Have gotten same mileage since day one with 245's

You bought the truck used right?

See if the tamperproof cap is still on the no-load fuel adjustment setscrew on the rear of the AFC housing (see pic). If its still on, Look for chipped paint on the cover screws. The tamperproof screw may have been replaced. If it looks like it be disturbed, adjust as in the above post.

Sorry. For some reason I thought you bought the truck used.

There is something wrong. Big Time. My truck ('94) gets twice the mileage as yours.

I didn't notice ANY change in the exhaust smell when I pulled my cat off.


You have no cat that could be clogged. Usally low Power and poor fuel economy go together. Apparently not in your case.

The truck is real "fat" or rich at idle. Could be worn injector nozzle needles not sealing tight on their seats after the injection has occured, causing fuel to drip or leak from the nozzles continously? This is called dribbing. This could be the cause of the rich condition. The obvious and simple things we have been through. Does your engine oil smell like diesel? Have you had an oil analysis done? Get a fuel contamination % in PPM?

You could pull an injector and have it looked at for problems. Or bolt in a new set and see if the fuel economy goes up. This is the classic Hit-or-Miss approach.

Or, Find a GOOD Cummins repair facility near you that KNOWS B series engines. Give them the truck and see what they find.

Rednut, not sure where you are in E. Pa. , but you might want to try Auto Wurks Diesel, have them take a look at your truck. They are supposed to be very good with those type of things. Good Luck.

RedNut, I agree with Jeff Burke. If you don't live too far away, try Auto Wurks Diesel in Caldwell NJ. They tuned my 97 and it runs 16. 2 in the quarter mi, gets 18 to 20 mpg, and always puts a smile on my face.
