My Favorite Ride Contest (Ends October 24, 2008)

I wish I had a picture, but I did not have a camera at the time. My first ride was a 1970 VW Bus Camper. At 16 yearls old, It was not my choice, but my Father's. I wanted a Ford Maverick with a 302 that was for sale, but Daddy thought the carpet was bad. We fixed up the Bus, and he painted it. It would only go 62 mph and I drove it for two years until I worked and saved enough to trade it off. I sure would love to have it back now, and I wish I had taken more interest in working on cars with my Daddy when I was youner. JC

I couldn't really identify with anyone else's nostalgia, and then I realized its because I'm young enough that I think I probably currently am driving the truck that I will later reminisce about . . . I suppose I should learn from others and keep it around, huh?

My favorite ride was back when I was growing up the family had decided to take a family vacation well my dad had this ford f100 1959 crewcab shortbed truck had a 223 6cyl all 7 of us in the truck and we were somewhere near Gorman when we lost the right rear wheel bearing Dad noticed the smoke and pulled off the side of freeway and we all got out to see what was wrong about that time the axle bearing caught fire so Dad reached in the bed grabed a can of coke and put the fire out well low and behold someone had called the fire department and said there was a truck over the side of the freeway on fire . after Dad explained that everything was ok and called a tow truck we were on our way to the garage . the funniest part was I believe that 2 or 3 engines showed up along with a ambluance . What fun we had when we were kid's

My Favorite Ride Contest

After very much thought i did realise the my favorit ride that id like to get back . really was considerd a wreck. It was a 1974 Peterbilt 352 COE

with a 335 Cummins and RTO12513 trans and 444 ratio SQHD rear ends .



When i bought the truck for $1500 it did not run infact it wouldnt turn over at all . The number 4 babbit had stuck to the crank , I had to have it towed home for $350. 00 , on the way home the driver side front wheel almost fell off of it .



Once i had her home I droped the pan and started pulling main caps .



I found the problem on number 4 the bearing just got hot enough to stick its self to the crank ,due to a cracked oil cooler . But very much to my likeing

I was lucky enough that the crank was in excellent shape with just a minor .



Polish job with emery cloth , a replacement of the mains and a check of the Rod bearings , my old girl was ready to live once again .



Then with some good used tires i could drive my Old Peterbilt . she was definately once wrecked truck as when i retired her for a Kenworth W900 A



When I scraped out the cab it litterly had stop signs welded and pop rivited in the dog house !!!!!!!!!!.



I loved that old truck because it was dependible and got 9 miles to the gallon

loaded down with hay and put 480 Hp to the ground

1968 Olds Delmont 88 Ragtop

This may not have been the best ride I have ever owned, but as my first ride it hold a special place. Bought it in '72 with 3 years worth of summer job money, $1600. The car had 38,887 miles on it and I ran it until 1975 when I got my first shirt and tie job working for Euclid Inc. ('74-'75 big green earthmovers) and bought a '75 Camaro 350 4bbl 4 Speed.



The Olds had power windows, brakes, steering, no A/C, it took it's top off instead, 350 2bbl.



This was my first automatic, since then: '75 Camaro, '79 C-10 350 4 speed, '52 Willys M-38 Military Jeep '65 Ford E-100 3 speed, '62 F-100 223 3 speed, '85 Caravan 2. 2L 5 speed, '97 Concorde (oops, good car but auto), '03 Ram 4. 7L 5 speed (shoulda got the 5. 9 I know) '05 Ram 5. 9L 6 speed, '97 Ram 5. 9L 5 speed.

My favorite ride is my first car, a 56 Chevy Station Wagon. I bought it when I graduated from High School. I cost me $25. 00. The engine and transmission was junk, the interior was trashed out, and it had broken windows. It took me 1 1/2 years rebuilding and restoring on a college student budget. When I got done I had a 283 dyno. at 350 horses, with a 3 speed overdrive, and finished interior. I favorite race was on the flats across White Sands Missile Range with a Corvette. When we got to Las Cruces we stop for coffee I asked how fast I was going and he said I doing 140 mph. I still have my Betsy parked in the backyard.

My '46 Chevy is my baby. My dad and I started building it when I was about 14. We tried to save wherever we could. Its on an 83 Chevy 1/2 ton chassis that's been dropped 3 inches all around. It has a 350 small block in it with about 350 horsepower. Automatic, 12 bolt rear end. We built the bed from scratch too.

View attachment 70591 Many fond memories attached to this old 85 Ford 3/4 ton with the 6. 9 diesel engine. I bought her in l987 and kept until 2000. It was underpowered compared to today's engine but just kept on truckin.

My favorite ride... this is easy... . Other then my CTD, my other favorite ride would have to be my work truck.



A 2007 Pierce 100' Tractor Drawn Aerial, with the Detroit S60, 515 horsepower, automatic, a Harrison 15KW generator, 14 exterior compartments, and enough tools to get the job done.



By the way, the best seat is in the tiller cab...

My favorite car was the one that got away. It was a used 1969 Dodge Charger Super Bee with a 440 magnum and 6-pack, mag wheels, traction bars and the whole works. I was 17 at the time. The sticker price was $1995. I don't know if it was a numbers matching car. My whole family went with me to the dealer to check it out because I wouldn't stop talking about it. The dealer handed me the keys and I fired it up. My dad said, "No way in hell. " He said I would be a slave to that car, but what he really meant was that I would kill myself in it. He was probably right on both counts. I would have been a slave to that car--for about 20 years. But if I bought it, kept it and survived, it would now be worth close to a quarter million dollars. Oh, the memories of youth!

Ohhhhh the memories of the Philipines. My favorite one was 2 guys holding your belt while you "watered " the roadway as it wound and bounced down the road at breakneck speed
