He just called me and said that the only code that it is throwing (viewable via the odometer display) is the infamous P1693... no other codes.

It's a '99 3500 regular cab 4x4 with a DTT auto. It just died going down the road and now it won't restart.

He has a Smarty on it, but left the hardware at home. He's going to have it towed home and then use the Smarty to see if he can yank any additional codes out of it.

About a year ago, it ate a crank sensor and the failure mode was the exact same scenario... but he didn't recall the codes it threw back then.

Any help or words of wisdom would be appreciated.

Matt

Update

Truck has 112,400mi - original VP.

LP replaced at 20k mi - he said it was part of a recall. (in-tank LP upgrade came WAY after this... so I don't think he has the in-tank... )

He just pulled some nasty codes with the Smarty:

P1688

P1689

Both of these are infamous for equating to "Hand over $1k... your injection pump has been violated by the angry VP44 gods and is no longer eligible to wear white on its wedding day. "

I got off the phone with him and divulged the bad news that he's going to have to spend some cake on the old girl. I referred him to MWFI's deal... seems to be the best deal going.

For now, he's back on the OEM program and ditched the Catcher code... not that it's going to make much difference.

Any other words of wisdom from the collective?

My friend Ed sends his thanks in advance.

Matt

P1688

Internal Fuel Injection Pump Controller Failure

P1689

No Communication Between ECM & Injection Pump Module

It would appear your friend has angered the VP44 gremlins. Payola time.

Sounds like you all are on the right track. Be sure to check the rear pump mount bracket. That year has the initial cheesy design that is prone to failure and may need repair/mod/replacement. I rewelded and modified mine 'cause I had get it going. Several thousand miles later and it's ok.

In the meantime, I bought the latest iteration of the support assembly. If you need the part number for the newly designed and very robust support assembly, let me know and I'll dig it out. Please note if you use this later assembly the pump component has to be bolted on with the pump out.

Oh, and make sure you bleed the fuel system up to the pump using your lift pump.

Good luck

MWFI has a branch in Agawam/springfield,MA and you can get the web pricing there! just bring your old one ,tell them you got the $ off the web and they'll hook you up! I just got mine there and "Buddy" was great ! even gave me a hat!

Thanks for the words of wisdom, folks.

He's out of Hartford, CT - so he's not all that close to Derby... but a heck of a lot closer than I am.

I wasn't aware that there was an issue with the support bracket - I'll relay that info to him. Thanks!

As much as I'd love to see him put a P7100 on that truck, I'm not sure he's ready to spend that kind of money on the old gal.

Thanks for the heads up on the Agawam/Springfield branch!

Just saw your note.

I'm 15 minutes away from Hartford so if I can be of help... . Just ask.

As a side note - My vp44 is on its way out and Scott from Massdiesel is putting a new on on in the next couple weeks.

Thanks for your help, guys.

I haven't heard anything out of him - so I'm unsure where things stand at the moment. I'll update the thread with any news as it trickles in.

Matt
