its a 2001. 5 3500, slightly bombed with bd inj kit. i believe 275 hp. under a load in 5th gear {gasp} it has an intermittent sound like the drive shaft is not in line, or the fan clutch is in a bind. in 6th the sound disappears again until the rpms rise above 2500 then the sound appears again. i say sound because there is no vibration that i can detect. i checked the archives, and it's not the howl or whine that ive read about. my partner was a passenger and said that it sounded like it was coming from the breather. i say its coming from the rear, just in case i pulled the air horn out of the breather today. has anyone else heard of this? any suggestions?

How much did THAT "under-hood" upgrade cost?

Packman, My ETH (sometimes known as the HO) made a weird noise a couple of times during a cold spell back in December after stopping for fuel. It was under acceleration getting back on the interstate and did it in fourth and fifth gear. I saw a recent post about the heater lines but it said they did it at around 1800 rpms. Mine was was 24-2500 while accelerating to merge. Sounded like it came from the back of the engine. Hasn't done it again. Like yours, I had no vibration but it was a clear, ear catching groan that got my attention. It hasn't done it again. That night it was in the teens outside. I thought it might have been the fan trying to decide whether to engage after running pretty hard for six hours and then stopping in the cold for 15 minutes.

flywheel maybe? i love my ho and want to make sure shes happy,[dont we all] i read that the high outputs have a different flywheel than its predecesors. hauled today without the air boot, and didnt hear it, but the load and grade wasnt as bad. what puzzles me is that the sound i was hearing at 2600 rpms was not constant but seem to gradually get louder, then wind back down again, just like you would expect the fan clutch to sound like, but ive heard that sound for twenty years and this was nothing that ive heard before.

Packman, I agree with how the sound went. It almost seemed like it was speed related cause when I heard it I let off momentarily (scared me #ad
) and it didn't instantaneously disappear so I continued accelerating and it went away. Don't know man. Maybe it's all those hosses trying to get out from under there.
