My Hose is slipping

Been having trouble with the first rubber intercooler fitting after the turbo comming out from under the clamps. It only happins when I can pull higher boost for a longer period (towing 10k up the mountain with the big rigs)



When it first happened, I pulled over and re-installed it, then it came loose again just before pulling in the driveway.



I removed the thing, and cleaned it. Its right next to the oil filter and was pretty dirty, so I figured maybe it got oil under the friction area. Well it worked fine for a couple weeks, until I hooked up to the camper. Now the rubber will pull out from under the hose clamp any time I go over 10psi.



So for the last time, I re-installed it again this afternoon (again, on the side of the road, with the camper hooked up), this time I left some extra rubber showing on the outside of the clamps. It came the rest of the way home fine, even pulled several nice hills with no problem. Did I fix it? or should I replace the hose and start over. I have moved the nut on the clamp so many times its no longer a lock nut!



On the way home I called the dealer, he said its not even in there warehouse, and he would have to special order it (for $61. 00), so I called Cummins 800 number to be connected to the Harrisburg shop, who told me "I THINK that is a Dodge part, and I don't have one, but I may be able to match one up for you" He would not even check the books because he was almost sure it was a Dodge only part!



I got a hill to tow up this weekend, and I sure hate having FERD owners see me on the side of the road under the hood with my camper in tow! (so far its come off 7 times this summer!)

Sounds like it must have oil on it and it wont stop sliding. Rubber will absorb oil and even wiping it off wont help. I would either replace it or at least try and clean is with a strong degreaser like Simple Green or brake cleaner/Gun Scrubber.

Where is the oil coming from? Is there a leak or a messy oil filter change? My hose is dry and stays dry so I would think that having any oil there is an abnormal situation.

Probably from that stupid breather bottle. That thing gets oil all over the place. Beofore i took mine out the fan would blow the oil everywhere.

Its from me not being carefull, When I remove the filter, sometimes I hit the AC line thats there, and the filter will spill some oil on the hose. I have cleaned it with rubbing alchole, but its probably weak from all the oil contact (and me being in a hurry and not cleaning it off right away)

I had the same problem. Finally got new one from DC. Clean the turbo elbow real good with detergent. I even used a rubberized cememt to the inside of the hose. Don't overtighten, but check at every oil change. Haven't had a problem in 40K miles.

You might try double clamping. Or you might try some rubber cement or non-hardening permatex, but these might make it hard to take apart if you ever need to.

Have you tried end for end swap, and sanding the metal lightly and cleaning inside of hose with a brillo pad light scruging should do it . And others ideas . Ron in Louisville Ky LOL

IC Hoses Blowing Off

My hose has blown off, or partially so, three times. I now try to remember to tighten the clamp as tighly as possible, before I try towing up and down steep grqades. But first I check the clamp to ensure that 1/8" or more of the hose extends beyond the clamp. Then I ensure that the clamp is square to the hose and to the IC piping, and then watch it closely as I tighten the clamp to ensure that it remains square.



The first time I took it into a Dodge dealer who simply tightened the hose with out keeping the clamp square to the pipe. The next big hill on I40 caused a partial pull off along with a loss of power.

The Dodge maintenance scheduler, and a Cummins Tech I talked to, both led me to believe that this is a common problem. The Dodge guy had just shifted to Dodge from Ford and said they have the same problem with Ford diesels.

On my school buses, I have never had a hose blow off. I've had hoses blow apart though

Thanks Rob! I got the parts, but did not have time to put them on before I left. I went away with the camper this weekend and pulled a couple hills. Seems the problem was I was putting the clamp on the edge of the hose, this time I left about 1/8" of rubber showing on the outside and it stayed sealed. But the orginal hose is weak from slipping so many times, and I will be changing to the one of the ones you send me this week.

I saw this at the Powershop:



"The most common air leaks are from intercooler hose connections. We have seen hundreds where the casting of the intercooler has a ridge of metal at the seam line which should have been machined off. These casting imperfections got missed, resulting in preventing the clamp from making a good seal on the hose. These small air leaks reduce performance and fuel economy markedly"

I have had a problem with mine in the past and most recently a friend of mine had the same problem. Here is the situation, both times we were towing heavy 5th wheels with our foot into it, both trucks have been pumped up considerably, when your pumping 30+ lb's of boost, something is bound to give. I check mine before each tow with the 5vr.

intercooler hose

I just had the company 2000 in to Dodge for this problem. The dealer tech said the reason the hose was blowing off was that the air filter was dirty. The Filter Minder did not indicate any restiction. I am going to put it under load today and see if the problem is corrected. The last time it blew off was under moderate load with the cruise on at 65mph and it had just topped a small rise at an overpass.

Maybe your dealer could explain the laws of physics that causes an IC hose to blow off (from more air) because of a dirty air filter (causes less air). Then please post them here.



I think the answer to this may be the key to solving world hunger and disease. I suspect it is BS.

Slipping hose

I talked with a guy this last weekend that had the same issues with his rig. He got tired of beening on the side of the road so he went to a big rig shop and gought some clamps they use that are spring loaded and he say no issues anymore so just my 2 cents.
