New 2102 longhorn with 17,000 combined weight. Sure didn't need max tow (didn't want it), the truck rolled right along unfazed by the weight.

Hey when did you take my truck? Looks exactly like mine. My 3:42 gears handle my 27,000# combined load great. What gears are you running?

Just got the factory 3:73 gear ratio. Haven't found the need for the max tow. Our living quarters horse trailer is 38', and about 16,000 lbs. , and the truck just walks away with it. Just wish I could find out how to get the tow haul and exhaust brake to stay on all the time, without having to turn them on every time I start the truck. Has made for a couple of interesting stops when I forgot to put them on!!!

I would love to have mine stay on all the time also. If you figure it out let me know!

Well regarding ''max tow''. I say there is not a whole lot of differnce between 3. 73 and 4. 10 gears. I choose the 4. 10 and like them, but you living in AZ with the higher speed limits then Oregon I'd likely do the 3. 73 too. Hopefully Dodge/Ram wise up and offer the ''max tow'' package on the 3. 73 gearing too. Oregon we have a max HWY speed of 65MPH and only on the interstates. 55MPH everywhere else even the back two lane, smooth as glass highways in the middle of now where. With the 80MPH in UT and 75MPH speed limit in many states the 3. 73 gears with the max tow, rear diff cover, upgraded transmission etc... would be a great idea.

They did... I ordered my new truck with the Max tow to get the 4. 10 and it arrived with 3. 73. Now the dealer checked and now he gets a pop up when he clicks Max Tow to order and it says no longer includes 4. 10 gear standard. I am now trying to decide if Chrysler screwed me or was a blessing in disguise?

I pull 11,000 Race trailer, 40' Gooseneck Featherlite Normally run around 73 mph which is 1750-1800 rpm. . With 4. 10 it would be 2000-2050 at 75???

This is may new (to me) 2011 (pre max tow) at 24,900lbs I have the 373 and did not have any problems going from western WA to northern ID. The 373 gear set should be a little stronger due to higher pinion tooth count (larger)

Bob V, I have a 2012 3500 SRW with the 373 gears, I haul the same trailer as you. This last month I went from Boise to Coeur d' Alene with no issues, it pulls the trailer really well.

No, I wrote that wrong. The weight of the trailer was 17,000. We had 130 bales on, at a weight if 100-110 lbs each, and the trailer is about 4,000. With the truck it was about 25,000. When I wrote it, I was thinking combined load of trailer and hay, but not the truck. Love the new truck!!

this was a total weight of 24,500 the 2 truck's went to Wenatchee, WA

I thought it was heavier than 17k combined but had to ask. I've done a bit of hay hauling with my brother in-law years ago, looks alot like loads we hauled.

Those new duallys are the best looking trucks out there. It makes it tough on a guy with the 3rd gen body not to want to get one :)

Bob,

What is your pin weight? from the pic you look lower in the rear than my setup. I have 4,400# sitting on my rear axle and mine looks more like KYOUNG's pic. Is yours 2wd?

Cummings,
Thats only 17,000 combined? 8k for truck, 4k+ for trailer, only 5k worth of hay?
Rich

Kind of thinking along the same lines but hay moisture is different all the time around here .
Looks like 3 wire bales 100 pounds each (50 bales)

Cool, I didn't know if it would work. Look at sig, the GCVW is around 23K, and pulls just fine with the 3:73 except for rolling hills at 55 MPH

Sorry its not a 4th Gen.

I dont know the empty rear wt but I was at 7,700 on the rear axle. I took two pics of the truck/trailer and they both look low. I think it was where I parked, most the time it looked level. I wasn't even all the way on the overloads yet
