Clutch or other problem, can not get in gear

5 transmissions and 2 clutches in 150,000 miles. First 2 transmission 5th gear failure and dealer error. Next 2 bad remans (STAY AWAY FROM MAN TRAN IN FL!!! 2nd one failed in 200 miles!!), latest trans from Standard in TX is ok. Now for the clutch about 15,000 miles ago I could not get the truck in gear, clutch was not releasing all the way. So I ordered up a SB Clutch and that was fixed. Now again the same problem, am I missing something?? Also under hard acceleration for the last month I get a noise that sounds like bearing that is getting stressed, it has had that noise in 2 transmissions so its not trans. I am thinking I have a bad throwout bearing or mabe a pressure plate problem, what do you guys think. TIA, Karl

Regarding your problem regarding complete clutch disengagement, I'd suggest:



1. Defective clutch release master or slave cylinder.



2. Defective pilot bearing/bushing (has the pilot bearing/bushing been changed in previous transmission/clutch swaps?)

I am assuming that you have already asked South Bend Clutch this question. Surely you would not be talking about a bad clutch from them without talking to them first.
 
Had a brain freeze, ment pilot bearing not throwout. Yes I did talk to them, we have eliminated hydraulic, clutch engages about half pedeal, no leaks. They are also suggesting pilot. Going to pull it apart :{ tonight. With all the problems I have had, I almost wish it was an auto. I could of more than paid for a complete DTT by now. Karl
 
1. pilot bearing

2. bad installation. for example, the tech lets the trans hang on or other wise bend the hub/splined part. The trans has to be plugged straight in, no strong "wiggling" up and down or side to side.

Good point! Especially in "backyard" transmission/clutch work using poor tools for the job - any "OOPS!" is likely to come back and haunt you at some point down the road...
 
oh noooo - not the "A" word! Know what you mean though. Even with no problems

"yet" I've been in some traffic messes that almost made me wish I didn't have third

pedal. Especially little cars that try to push you to go faster. All I can say for them

is wait till I get enough mods done so I can roll black, then look out.

Well if there is a problem with the install, I guess I will have to have a long talk with Standard Transmission. I supplied a new pilot bearing and there installer said the old was fine and good. Not going to get to it tonight, will let you guys know. Also I do not consider myself a "backyard" mechanic. Went to school for it, worked it, got tired of turning wrenches. Have a fully functional shop to work in, just no lift :( .

Dam Karl, never heard of anybody having trouble with a South Bend clutch. You must be standing too close to me, some of my bad luck starting to wear off on you. Hope you get it worked out to your satisfaction. My DOC in Angola, IN, Dave's Diesel swears by SB clutches. Has NEVER hada bad one. If you getta chance and still need help maybe worth having them take a look. They've been doin diesel since they were crappin yellow and stand behind what they do.

Not likely. Pilot bushing is in a blind hole in the crankshaft. Input shaft from the transmission ride is inserted into the bushing.



<grin> I guess that technically you COULD replace the bushing but that would require pulling the engine.....
 
If you are getting noise under hard acceleration, I wouldn't think it would be the pilot brg. Do you get the noise in all gears? Maybe the rear axle is getting tired? Most rebuilt transmissions re-use all the major components if they look good. Sometimes they can look good but aren't. I would guess that the noise is transmission related.
