Pulled into the Taco Bell drive thru today and the lady on the other end of the speaker told me to "SHUT MY ENGINE OFF, I can't here you over the noise. "I was shocked!Offended I tell ya. How could this be? I ALWAYS shut my Ford Powerstroke diesels off,but I thought those days were over. I wanted to tell her how quite the new 04. 5 Cummins is,but I figured it wasn't worth it. :D

I've had the same thing happen to me. Sometimes I shut down, sometimes I don't have to. I guess that makes it a little better than my '99 in that department.

Failed??? Not hardly!

I had the same thing happen to me the other night. I thought it was funny as heck. All those times when I couldn't understand the crappy sound coming out of those boxes...

I figure I got even!!! :D

LOL. first time i ever was in enough of a rush to use the drive thru teller at my bank. had the truck turned off during my transaction, turned the ole' girl over and the poor lady in the next lane you could say was interupted. . i got a bit of a chuckle out of it, and i think the teller in the bank had one also. gotta love the noise.

I actually had a person that was in front of me insist that I shut my old 01 down so they could order. They said they could't hear to order. :D As for the 03, I have only had to shut it off 2-3 times. The only times I have had to shut it off was when the person doing the drivethru was talking really low and I couldn't hear them

I'm still in the habit from my Gen2s of idling while parked over yonder and walking up to the expresso window. Besides its usually a good time for the dogs and I to stretch our legs. They also have come to expect a biscuit at the huts :)

I always shut mine off out of pure courtesy. You have to be nice to those people on the other side of the speaker so you don't get a buger in your burger or a fly in your fries.

I usually pull past the speaker a little so that it's even with my rear door and in doing so I have yet to have someone tell me to shut off my engine.

I don't do drive thrus for this exact reason. Don't want to shut down, don't want the hassle. Besides, have you ever noticed that during noon lunch rush the drive thru line is super long but if you park and walk in you can order within 1 minute?

I don't get what this obsession is with not shutting the engine off for a brief period. If these engines are as durable as claimed, then surely turning the engine off for two minutes won't hurt them.

"shutting down" generally means cooling the turbo down... I never go through a drive through if there's more than one or two cars in it, so when I get to the little squawk box, my truck is at least a couple minutes away from being cool enough to shut down... I've shut down quickly many times, but like I said, not for a $2 hamburger!

most places I go have a live person that takes your order, so it's a non-issue (though I usually still have to yell! LOL!)

Mine is straight piped and ive had one old lady tell me to turn off my truck at the McDonalds drive- thru. It was 5:50 in the morning so i wasnt in a great mood so i just pulled up to the window and gave my order. .

Heres a good one though...

There was this guy at the bank that ive known for a while. . really dont like him much. We where in the drive threw and all the lanes are under a ceiling, So i pulled up got my deposit slip was filling everything out, blah, blah, blah... . Keep in mind my truck is striaght piped, so in idle it is even LOUD... Well since i didnt care for the guy (frat ***) i put my rpm's up to 1200... LMAO. . He got out of his jeep and told me to turn it off, i just acted like i couldnt hear him... then as i pulled away i was Laughing my *** off and made a gesture to him that he was # 1. :-laf.

How old are you, 16?

Our family is in the restaurant business (gold star chili- its a cincinnati thing) anyway we have drive thrus and I have had the unfortunate pleasure working the drive thru a few times when we are short on help etc. Those drive thrus are very sensitive to engine noise and diesels are by far the worst. As far as which diesels are the loudest and quietest on drive thrus in my experience, here is the list

from Quietest to loudest:

1)03+ dodge cummins and duramax

2)6. 5L gm diesel

3)6. 0 powerstroke

4)7. 3 powerstroke

and by far the most ear blistering pain in the ass is the 12v cummins :D
