Stopping a runaway 5.9L (no drive shaft)

5.9L 555 vs 600 Cummins - trade-offs?

Not sure but I think you see most of the brass on the first couple tens of thousand miles. I always thought after a while you wont see as much in the oil.

Also, they take a while to break in and shift smoother (that's how mine was anyways). When it was new, on the first couple shifts in the morning, 2nd to 3rd gear shifts would hang for a sec. After about 70k miles it hasn't done that anymore.

I noticed on your list that the Penzoil was used at the same time the transmission was breaking in. Just wondering if the Penzoil is getting a "bad rap" in this case.

Maybe not - just a thought.

Anyways, I've always been "leery" about using anything but what was recommended by the factory on these transmissions.

Its also like motor oil. When I spoke with a Cummins engineer about oil he basically said any oil that meets the spec is fine, but here's the kicker, he said it MUST be 15w40. So, no 5w30 for me either. Even in Alaska.

So back on 6 Speeds... I'd consider not gambling and go back to what is spec'd for our trannys and let it break in some more. Maybe add an oz of Gary's modifier, but at least the base oil is what is supposed to handle the specific stresses our transmission's put on oil. JMO

As a side thought, it would not be very good if the pilot bearing is a little tight, or the clutch isn't disengaging all the way. That's not too good on syncros either.

(sorry, haven't read the entire thread so this may have already been covered)

I ran the PZ fill after 50k... it really wasn't all that great.

For the cost of these fluids, they *should* work. I'm still wondering about the GM fluid... they have two: basically one is synchromesh, the other is a synchromesh with modifier.

I hate my nv5600 what a waste of $3000.00 dollors I didn't have nothing like changeing from automatic to junk for 600 miles cost me $3500.00 very expencive 600 miles that's almost $6. A mile just for the transmission

OK, I start. "Welcome" to TDR.

Your truck was converted from AT to MT, correct?

What is the current drivability issue that concerns you. What is the trans or clutch not doing correctly?

Also, fill out your signature so we know what the details are about the truck.

how do I do that

I finally put Amsoil Synchromesh in mine NV and I'm very happy with the results. It shifts smoother and lost the clunkiness of going into third.

I was having the same issues, in an attempt to repair all that ails, I have been busy and broke trying to catch up on upgrades. Last night I installed the fast cooler assembly with the sight glass. I filled it with 70w90 GL-5 redline. I will be driving it today to see how it performs. I did clean the flat magnet in bottom of trans. There were some nice pieces of metal in it. Never cleaned since 2001 as I just learned about it. If you have side covers off, really find and clean that magnet. I will more often now. Will have to see how much better shifting and temps turn out after fast cool addition.

The 6 speed NV-5600 takes syncromesh that is like a 5w-30. Anything else is not going to work very well. You need to drain the 70w90 out of it ASAP. Also the NV-5600 needs to be overfilled by a quart w/o the coolers and more to make up for the coolers extra oil capacity.
