Transmission Slips On Corners?

My shift knob (or the label at least) is slowly rotating. So far this is the only indication that the truck is possessed (besides all that power). It was aligned correctly when I picked it up at the end of january. . Now, 3000 miles later It's rotated clockwise a little more than 2/3rds the way around. I figure it'll be back to normal at each oil change (5k). Does this happen to anyone else, or am I just wierd? #ad

Yeah, this is typical of the shift pattern. Mine only rotates when I wear leather gloves. Sometime you can rotate it back if you push and turn with the palm of your hand. If not, then pry the pattern out with a small screwdiver and realign it and press back into place. You could probably put a dab of glue to keep it from moving if it really bothers you.

I found with mine that the problem was in the shift lever where it threads into the transmission. I pulled up the boot, took out the shaft, gave it a liberal coating of Locktite and it it hasn't turned anymore. This might not be your problem, but it was mine. All my other vehicles used to have a lock (jam) nut so you could tighten it and set the shaft where you want it. I guess DC saved money by not supply a jam nut.

mine does the exact same thing, except I get one more thing too, I get this really annoying rattling noise from it too. I think when it warms up here alittle, its coming aprt to see whats up

Yep, mine has rotated a little over 180 degrees in 20,000 miles. I guess if someone steals the truck, they will have h*ll of a time figuring out the shift pattern. #ad

Yep, I had the same problem. There have been various posts to this subject. Here's what I did to fix it. Like someoneelse said, take a small screwdriver and pry the medallion off, then I use a small amount of Multipurpose glue and spread it around the inside of the shift knob. I also checked the tightness of the nut inside the knob. I then reinserted the medallion and Voila! no more turning. I have also heard a small amount of rtv will work. Some one posted that the retaining nut at the transmission was loose and allowed the whole shift lever to rotate. Might want to check this also. Good luck

It is part of the SLT+ package , when it makes a complete rotation it is time to change the oil!! Don't tell Dodge, or they will charge another few hundred bucks for this feature!!!

The plastic piece with the picture of the gear pattern is just held into the leather shift knob by friction. Now if you can figure out how to pry it out with out doing damage, you can tighten the nut under it and the rattle will go away. I did this a year or so ago and cured the rattle, but put a little mark on the shift knob with the screwdriver trying to get the center plate out(the piece that keeps moving on you).

also mine still moves. I leave it upside down, Stops idiots from being able to drive the truck #ad

Glad to see no posts telling me I'm wierd. #ad

It doesn't really bother me, I just wondered if I was the only one.

A sharp knife (curved blade like a pocket knife) may be the ticket to getting that off of there).

Oh yeah. . And mine's just a SLT. #ad

Yep. Count me in on the pattern rotation. I always ride with my hand on the stick making the rotation even worse. I guess mine has rotated 6+ times in 20k miles. I was thinking about putting a RPM guage on it. I'd have the only bombed gear stick! #ad

Speaking of shift knobs, has anybody found an aftermarket supplier. I'd like to replace mine.

Me too, I would like a different shifter, one that is less in the way of things, may require linkage parts...

My truck is in, waiting to be prepped!

If yours is rattling, then there is no need to pry the cap off. Your jam nut has already come off, so just grasp hold of the shift knob and unscrew it. then use a screwdriver to pop the cap off from underneath (where the threads are). Reinstall the knob, use a little locktite thread lock on the jam nut, and thighten it down. Place a dab of rubber silicone or five minute epoxy (just a dab) on the groove inside the shiftknob and press your cap back in (properly aligned of course). These shift knobs are pretty maleable. If you had to pry it out, use a very small screwdriver. It will leave a small impression on the shiftknob but once you get it all back together you can work the mark out with some firm caressing with your thumb.
