My puzzling 89 again

Now if the front of the truck is higher than the back (stopped at light on a hill) the truck will go dead and will not start. I rolled it down the hill onto level ground and it will start but goes dead when I put it in drive. I ended up backing under its own power into a parking space at a grocery store until I can look at it today. Could this be the lift pump?

Maybe theres something wrong with the pickup in the tank?? Its gonna be a bugger to get the tank down to look at it, but maybe there is something wrong in the tank with the pickup broken off or something weird like that.

That's what I was leaning towards, plan to remove the tank this weekend and if it's OK than a I will install a lift pump next week.
