My truck dies at idle?

My truck started to die at idle the other day. Everytime I'd pull up to stop it will die unless I give it a little pedal. If it dies, it starts right back up, but will instantly die if I don't give it pedal. Otherwise, it runs completely normal. Yesterday, it started to idle normal (800 RPM) sometimes, then die other times, so now it's intermitant, whats going on??

It sounds like your idle is too low. If it's a automatic transmission it should idle at least 750 RPM in gear with the AC on.

When the truck idles, it's normal at about 800 RPM. When it's doing it's dying, it doesn't idle at all, it just dies. It even dies between shifts if you don't do it fast enough!

The next thing I would check is the overflow return valve. It's on the engine side of the injector pump even with the first delivery valve. It looks like a banjo fitting. If you remove it a good idea is to cram a rag below it in the gap between the pump and engine to catch the washers. Also check to see that the throttle linkage is tight. There are two screws that attach the linkage lever to the pump lever at the back of the pump. They can get loose and cause odd behaviour. Use an 8mm wrench to tighten them if they are loose.

Thanks Joe, the overflow valve is new. As a matter of fact, I had the injector pump rebuilt about 2000 miles ago. I will be checking the linkage though.

Loosen the governor springs one click (each side) and reset your idle speed screw for about 900 rpm. Be sure the retainer to stud distance is the same on both sides. Did the problem begin right after putting in the governor spring kit?

Two things I would check being that it is an intermittent problem. #1, Check that your shutdown solenoid is pulling up all the way. Just start it,then pull up on it. See if your idle changes. My 95s boot fell apart and it acted up intermittently. #2,If you have your stock fuel lines,they are toast. Change them. Could be sucking air. Good luck.

I had about 1700 miles and 3 to 4 weeks on the truck after the GSK before it started acting up. Do you still think it's related to the GSK? I drove it all day yesterday and it didn't have any idle problems. I did get to check the shut down solenoid while it was having the dying problem and it was working fine. I checked the linkage today and it is fine.
