Hey Guys,

As some of you may know I was reluctantly trying to seel my 92 D250 for the last 7-8 months with little success. Well that all ended when I put the truck on fleabay 2 fridays ago. I listed it on a 7 day auction, and had lots of people looking at it,and watching it. I was sure after a few days that I would reach my reserve price of $4500 easily, and I did after some furious bidding, and a final winning bid of $5501. The strange thing about started on the second day of the auction. The high bidder was a person with 0 feedback, and after some investigation I noticed he was the winning bidder on a truck that was almost identical to mine in the town next to mine. I thought this too be wierd, and also in my investigation I noticed the high bidder was also the winning bidder on lots of things during the month of October, but still had no feedback. I brought this to ebays attention, and contacted them about cancelling his bid. Ebay thought it was odd as well, and told me how to cancel his bid. Before I did this I contacted a seller of one of the items this bidder had won,and asked why no feedback. The woman replied, and said she had spoken on the phone with the buyer, but still had not received any payment. Shortly thereafter I received about three messages from the bidder about how he really needed the truck, and was willing to pay up to,and over my reserve. I reluctantly allowed him to rebid, and he ended up winning the auction.

Now the really crazy stuff begins.

If you have stuck with me so far this gets really funny/scary.

The buyer ended up being in my neighborood the night the auction ended, and he called to ask if he could come by to see the truck he won. I said sure, and he came by to look at it,and I realized real quick that this guy wasn't all there. It seemed he really didn't know anything about trucks, let alone 1st gens. He liked the truck, and told me he won this one,and the one I knew about that was nearby,so that he could get his boat rental, and moving business going on Long Island,NY.

Fast forward to Wednesday night when he calls me,and asks if he can come by around 10:30 PM with cash, and pick up the truck. I said sure, but don't be too late,as I have a wife, and kids, and need to work in the morning. He shows up,and we exchange money, titles, and some I TRIED TO BY-PASS THE CUSSING FILTER-chat. He asks me if there is a good place that he can bring the other truck he bought with a rental trailer on it so that he can load up my truck. I tell him there is a huge highschool parking lot about a tenth of a mile up the road, and I drive my truck up there with him following me. When I get in the lights of the parking lot I finally see his rental trailer that is from U-Haul,and is meant for a regular car,not a Club cab trubo diesel 1st gen.

The guys asks me to guide him onto the trailer, and I tell him I think he is crazy trying to trailer this behemoth to LI on that trailer. I reluctantly guide him onto the trailer, and he is slipping the clutch something awful, and giving the truck way too much fuel to get up the not-so-steep ramps. He gets the front tires all the way up onto the trailer, and I notice the rear wheels were still on the ramps. I tell him again that the trailer is too small, and then I notice the trailer has big stickers that say maximum weight 4000lbs,GVW 6000lbs. I tell him I think my truck is about 5000+lbs,and he is way over the weight. He says the truck will tow it fine, and I say yes the truck is completly capable, but the trailer isn't suited for it with no sway control, surge brakes, and apparently low weight capacity.

The guy comes up with an idea to slide the ramps back in,but not all the way so that they stick out enough to allow the rear wheels to sit on them. He thinks backing the trailer up to a hill will allow him to do this, and I tell him again that I think he is crazy to even want to use this trailer let alone having the rear wheels sit on the ramps. He asks me to guide him onto the ramp, and I start telling him to cut the wheel to one side, and he isn't paying attention to me,and drives the truck off the ramps, and gets it stuck on the side of the trailer. The lower control arm is hung up on a large metal guard for the taillight, and he thinks it best to just leave it for the night in the school parking lot, which I know is a recipe for a tow in the morning. I tell him I am going to get my floor jack, and my truck. I get the stuff, and we get the truck off the trailer, and he decides to stay the night in a local hotel, and try again in the morning. I tell him to get a bigger trailer, but he says it is the biggest they rent, and it will work fine.

He loaded it the following day by driving it up the ramps, and using a jack to jack therear of the truck up high enough to slide the ramps in. He told me that he tried to strap it down using the straps that go over the front tires, but they didn't reach,so he had to drive to a local autoparts place to get ratchet straps, and off to CT he went to get a ferry to LI. I talked with him today, and he said it was a scary ride especially down hill, and he could only go 40-45 MPH as anything higher was dangerouse. I think the whole steup was dangerous.

He told me today that he pulled into a rest stop and a trucker told him that everyone on the CB was talking about him,and that he should really park that thing before he kills someone. I can't believe he made it that far without being pulled over, and arrested. Have you guys ever seem anything like this? I will try to attach a pic of the trailer with my truck on it that I took with my camera phone. It was really sad to see my old girl leave, and even sadder thinking about it falling off a trailer, and maybe hurting someone. Watch out there guys for nuts from NY towing 1st gens.

Sorry for the novel here, but I thought you guys would like the story.

I'm from NY, but upstate. There is no freakin' way I'm crazy or stupid enough to do that! That trailer is waaaay too small. The trucks look almost alike, too bad he will probably wreck them both in short order.

Glad you finally sold it. :)

I just hope this guy doesn't trash these 2 trucks, what a shame, someone getting ahold of a piece of equipment they know nothing about... . Nice looking truck btw. . at least you got it sold and that was priority one, but wow! talk about overweight city.

Both trucks are the same color, have the same mudflaps and both have camper shells, is there something in the water up there??

My truck was/is blue, and silver the other one was blue, and a goldish color(not silver). The trucks were very similar. Mine is a 5 speed the other was an auto, and mine has the blue/grey interior, and the other had the far nicer tan color interior. They both even had the same Toyo Open country tires. I am not sure about the mudflaps I think mine were different.

This guy was out of his mind, and I hope he takes care of my baby. I gues I shouldn't care, because I got the money, but my ole blue was part of the family.

Friends dad did that with a 1976 ford e350 van. Uhaul trailer wasn't long enough. It was,'t quite as bad as yours, but good thing for that guy is that the front of the truck weighs enough to help the trailer track straight. Friends dad lived in New jersey, van had been wrecked on the way from indiana to NJ, and was in pennsylvania. It took us 20 hours to make the trip, we could only run 45mph or the trailer got to whippin. To top it off friend drove his 68 mustang from NJ, with no heat. It was the first of January.

Let's see crazy and has two 1st gens, you shouldv'e asked him to join tdr. Mmeier, my oldie is doing better on the bay the second time around as i hoped.

Looks scary enough, what part of LI does he hail from so i can stay faar away, lol. I hope he does`nt use similarly undersized equpiment for moving boats... yikes! I`ll keep my eyes peeled for yer old ride and let ya know if I run int-... . errrr see it.

Greenport I think, but I could be wrong. I know it was one of the fingers, and not the one that Mantauk(sp?) is on.

I hope she is well taken care of,because I already miss her,and it was/is the best truck I have ever owned.

I did ask him to join the TDR,but I bet he doesn't.

That is scary, a friend of my son tried something simular but did not slow down when it started to whip... six months later he can walk unaided again, kind of.

Could not see if the ball was mounted on the bumper or he had a regular class IV hitch. If the ball was mounted on the bumper he was taking even more of a chance. Some childrens people are pretty dangerous. He could get some serious fines if there were to be an accident investigation. Did the trailer have breaks and did they have the automatic braking in case of a disconnect. If he got buy with it he will do it again. Sway or no sway. Cops don't pay much attention, they are too busy watching 18 wheelers for the larger fines.

Holy Moly... . Hopefully this guy will get pulled over by law enforcement before anyone gets hurt/killed. Your 92 sure looks like a an old sweetie :D I can certainly understand why you would miss it already!

See that kind of thing all the time where I grew up. I know, it's dangerous as can be, but doesnt change cheapskates trying to get by with the bare minimum. But, they drive 20mi down the 2 lane road, not the next state up the interstate.

The trailer was mounted on a class IV,or V trailer hitch that was capable of doing what it was doing, but that didn't make it any safer. There is no way I would have let him do all this on the bumper, and I really shouldn't have helped him in it at all. the trailer had those surge style brakes you see on the typical U-Haul trailer, and I am not sure it had any provision for break-away,but I didn't analyze it too much. I was actually surprised he didn't get pulled over especially with his photo copy of a MA license plate in the rear window of the cap on the tow vehicle which is illegal in the peoples republic of MA. there are no paper tags in MA,and this guy was taking all sorts of chances in life. He did tell me after the fact that he will never tow anything like that again,it was just too dangerous(No $hite!!!).

I hope he takes good acre of the truck. He told me he would stay in touch, and maybe send me some pics of the old girl.

Chris

Sucks when you have to sell something that nice to someone like that, no matter how they leave with it. I know it isn't fun to sell stuff to people you know but at least then you have an idea of what the person is like.

Sorry you had to sell your truck.
